The world faced 200 natural calamities in the 2nd half of the 20th century. • More than 1.4 million people lost their lives in these disasters • 90% of the casualties resulted from the floods & cyclones
During 1991-2002, 5,31,159 persons were killed by natural disasters (Center for Research on Epidemology of Disasters(CRED) Belgium) • 26th Dec. 2003, Bam Earthquake claimed 26271 lives • 26th Dec. 2004, Asian Tsunami resulted in more than 1,75,000 casualties
