What is 21st century education? Education that addresses a rapidly changing world filled with new PROBLEMS as well as new POSSIBILITIES
“Large American companies can make more money selling knowledge that then can by making and selling things.” In a “global knowledge economy” human capital is the most important resource. Jobs are changing in 4 ways: • Less hierarchy & supervision • More autonomy & responsibility • More collaboration • Less predictability & stability The New American Workplace by James O’Toole & Edward Lawler (2006) 21st Century jobs
Students need the following skills: The ability to act independently & solve problems on their own. Strong interpersonal written, oral, & social skills to collaborate with colleagues Strong global literacy to understand people around the world. The ability to acquire the information they need to do the job The ability to learn new skills as corporations change strategies to stay competitive. “We look for employees who can learn how to learn.” UPS CEO (2005)

Authentic assessments Assessments must measure all five results that matter: core subjects; 21st century content; learning skills; ICT literacy; and life skills. Assessments must use modern technologies to increase efficiency and timeliness. A balance of assessments, including high-quality standardized testing, along with effective classroom assessments. Standardized tests alone can measure only a few of the important skills and knowledge students should learn. 21st century assessment
21st century assessment rubric This rubric can be used to assess the level at which students demonstrate 21st century skills while completing an assignment.
