Overview and Objectives • Identify ethical issues associated with the use of technology • Understand how ethical issues affect the learning environment • Understand the important role that educators play in promoting ethical behavior • Understand, and recognize unethical behavior • Understand countermeasures instructors can use to combat unethical behavior

Tech-Based Cheating • Information can be easily stored on personal computing devices • Network connections can be used to surf for answers during exams • Other people’s work can be easily obtained and copied • Through web searches • Through web sites that offer term papers for sale • Cell phones • Texting answers to accomplices • Using cameras to photograph exams

  4. Technology Assisted Plagiarism • It’s easier to search for plagiarized work with search engines • Software programs have been specifically developed that compare student papers to amassed databases and uncover cheating • turnitin.com • EVE2 (essay verification engine; only compares free web sources) • WCopyfind (U of Virginia; only compares local docs) • Secureexam (locks down PCs during exams)

Methods Teachers can use to Combat Academic Dishonesty • Clearly convey expected academic behavior to students • Minimize student opportunities to engage in dishonest behavior: • Ban electronic devices from exams • Attentive proctoring • Use multiple versions of exams • Do not recycle old tests • Use plagiarism detection software • Have students turn in successive iterations of papers throughout the development process

  6. Netiquette • Lurk before you leap into discussions to get a feel for how discussions are conducted. • On threaded discussions, look to see if your question has been answered before posting • Don’t flame others; be respectful • Beware of being baited by Forum Trolls
