Humanitarian Desire • Human desire was used to want to support the Cubans against an oppressive Spanish regime contributed to the US to involvement in the war because of sympathy for the democratic aspiration of the Cuban rebels
Naval Power • Contributed to the US entry into the war with pressure from domestic tension & expanding capitalism pushed US to find new markets.
Yellow Journalism • Sensational style of writing, which exaggerates the news to lure and enrage readers. • Yellow Journalism also led to a public outcry for American involvement in Cuba’s struggle for independence.
De Lome Letter • President McKinley tried diplomatic means to resolve the crisis with Spain. • The Spanish minster to the US (De Lome) wrote a letter that criticized Pres. McKinley, calling him “weak” and a bidder for the admiration of the crowd
USS Maine • US ship that blew up in the Havana harbor killing more than 260 men. • US newspapers claimed the Spanish had blown up the ship and this outraged Americans. • It would later be found out that it was an accident. • All of these pressures led McKinley to ask Congress for a declaration of war.
