Summit Ink January 31, 2012 Issue 8 Pass changes bring mixed thoughts from Summit students Tashawna Alvarado, News Editor Our school has some more changes, and it has to do with students’ passes. To get more information, I interviewed Mr. P. When I asked Mr. P why some students got their passes taken away, he responded, “Students lose their passes by abusing the pass privilege and not using them in the right way.” Mr. P said, “Students lose their passes by not going where they are supposed to go, not having it signed and coming to school late.” The people responsible for taking the passes away are the disciplinary team. Students are able to earn their passes back, but to earn them back, Mr. P said, “They must meet with me and we will review the process for why they lost their pass; for the second violation, they lose your pass for a month.” (article continues on page 3) Mr. P smiles as he takes away Tashawna’s pass Summit seniors relaxin’ at booth Davail Dow, Roosevelt Simmons, 8th grader, and Jared Kleine Jaivon Spearman, Ashley Menton, and Niamiah Rivera Desmond Harris and George Huston play games Summit skaters roll in new year at Skate Zone incentive Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief Last week on January 25, there was a skating party at the Skate Zone. Students started to leave at 12 o’ clock and everyone came back at about 2:30pm. There was a food and drink court for a low price which was great! The only studentsthat were allowed to go were the studentswith at least 100 Knight Bucks. The activities that were offered were skating, mini games, laser tag, and bumper cars. When I asked Mrs. Newbrough if she had a great time at the Skate Zone and why, she said, “I had a great time, because I love to skate and I never left the floor the whole time, I liked helping student’s learn how to skate.” I asked her what she thought about going skating and she replied, “I was so glad that it got switched to roller skating because I can’t ice skate ,but I did have lots of fun roller skating.” When asked did she skate and how was it, she responded, “Yes, it was a blast, because I haven’t been skating in a long time.” Mrs. Newbrough said, “It was the best; we should do it every month.” When asked if she thought that this was a good monthly incentive. I don’t know how to skate, but of course, I’ll try to learn how because I do want to learn to skate, but I’m afraid that I will fall. Hopefully, someone will help me , like Mrs. Newbrough, and take their time to teach me how ;so I can be a better skater.
2 Opinion Page The Chronicles of the Jelly Fisher Cameron’s Corner Ausanae Cameron, Opinion & Profile Editor Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor I have many problems with Facebook’s new add-ons and its new format. My opinion on this issue is that they need to stop making so many changes for pointless reasons. Facebook is one of the most viewed social websites on the internet. I think they are making the changes to get even more viewers, but I do not know why, because they already have a lot of viewers. The problems make me want to delete my Facebook, because they are so annoying. They need to fix the problems or stop making the changes. There are several problems that annoy me when I am on Facebook. When I log onto Facebook, my instant messagerbox is sometimes not there. I have to refresh the page. If that does not work, it will usually say that it is offline. I try many different things to attempt to fix the problems. If none of those things work, I just log off and log back in. I dislike the new Facebook time line on some people’s profile. People have the choice to add the time line to their profile pages or to keep it the old profile format. I dislike most of the new Facebook formats, because they are just weird, difficult to figure out, and they are making Facebook slow. There is so much different stuff in the time lines. It is difficult to figure out, because I am use to the old one. They seriously need to fix these problems before they start losing viewers. We have been trying to get the teachers to let us listen to music in class and the answer is always no. In my opinion, I think we should be able to listen to music in certain classes like art, gym, and even during lunch. Music keeps me calm and on task. Other students and I would be motivated to get our works done faster if we had this incentive. If we try to compromise with the teachers, maybe we could listen to music. We should have the privilege to listen to music in class with permission of the teachers. We should have to earn the privilege to use our electronics in class. We can’t take advantage of the opportunity. I know for me when I am listening to music I focus better especially when I am writing or drawing. I like that I can just zone out. When listening to music, I don’t have to hear what people say about me; it’s less drama to me . The big issue about music is that students listen to music as the teacher give directions. This causes students not to listen. We have to give prove that we are mature enough to listen to music and follow directions to stay on task at the same time. I have asked a couple students abouthowthey feel about us not being able to listen to music in our specials and during lunch. We all basically feel the same about it. Lunch should be a time where we can listen to music because we’re not in class; we have nothing to pay attention to. All in all the student body would be much happier and easier to work with if we had music. Marcus Harris, Artist
Profile Page 3 Mrs. Davis Eva Baker Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief Brion Koenig, Photographer & Profile Editor While sitting down interviewing my lovely big sister Eva D. Baker, I have learned probably a little more than I already knew about her life. Her plan before college is to graduate. I asked if she was going to take the ACT, and she said, “No and I don’t know why.” Eva’s birthday is coming up, it is February, 8th1993, and her Zodiac sign is Aquarius. When asked what was her favorite video game was, she replied, “Madden 2011.” Eva’s favorite hobby is playing basketball. I asked CeVon what he thought about Eva’s basketball skills, and he stated, “She’s cool though, she recently hit a floater at the tournament game last week.” I then asked Eva what her favorite thing to do during her free time was, and she said, “Sleep and eat.” This is so true; all she does at home is sleep and eat. She plans on having a job because she likes to make her money. She really liked working at the Austintown Little Caesars. Eva enjoys listening to music, too. Her favorite rappers are Lil Wayne and Drake because they are her idols and she looks up to them. Also, their music is the best compared to all other music which is not interesting to her. I asked my sister, Eva, what her favorite subject is at school, and she said, “Math because I like to count, lol.” When asked about her swag Eva thinks that her swag rate is ten, but if I had to rate her I would give her a eight. In my own opinion my sister is a good student. Hopefully, she will become a good person in life. All the best, sis! Irecently sat down and talked to Miss. Davis for our next staff profile. I learned so much about her. For instance, her favorite colors are navy and silver because she loves the Dallas Cowboys. Ms. Davis is definitely a family-oriented person. She has one daughter, Kennedy, who loves to spend time with her mother. “We love to do science things together,” Ms. Davis said. Though she is rooted in the Science classroom, Ms. Davis does it all. She helps Mr. Mccarty with music sixth period. She also helps Miss. Brown with health whenever she needs it. For the rest of her time, she helps out in science for the 9th-12th graders. Miss. Davis went to and graduated from Mt. Union college with a degree in biology. If Miss. Davis got to pick a job other than teaching, she would have become a veterinarian, because she loves animals. She has lots of hobbies like shopping, reading and watching football. Also, she loves noncontact kickboxing. She also told me that she loves the Dallas Cowboys. More than anything else though, she loves helping students and seeing students achieve their goals, just like student Angelica Clinkscale. I learned a lot from Angelica about Miss Davis. She thinks Miss Davis is outgoing. Angelica also said MissDavis is a very cool person and as a female teacher, she has a strong voice when she needs it. In general, she is a really nice teacher. I also sat down and talked to Dayna Banks about her. He thinks Miss. Davis is very helpful, and she is very nice to him. Throughout this interview with Miss. Davis, I discovered that she is a very good teacher and I enjoyed doing this interview. I learned a lot about Miss Davis and wouldliketo thank Angelica and Daynafor giving me their opinions on Miss Davis as well.
Pass changes bring mixed thoughts from Summit students Tashawna Alvarado, News Editor 4 If students lose their passes, they have to be escorted by a teacher to the office, restroom, etc. Mr. P. says, “If you don’t have a pass, it doesn’t effect your Knight Bucks, because passes have their own values.” I asked Mr. P. why students were not allowed in the office during class, and Mr. P responded, “Because the office is a very busy department in the school, and there are a lot of papers that need to be filed; the office cannot be interrupted.” Mr. P. says, “Students are allowed to go to Mrs. York’s office to address issues and concerns that they have.” A good question I asked Mr. P. was what if one uses both of their bathroom passes and really has to go. Mr. P responded, “A teacher will have to escort you to address the issue.” When asked if students were allowed to get time outs, Mr. P said, “That is addressed on the individual basis that is on their IEP’s.” My thoughts about the changes are that they are okay. The rules aren’t that hard to follow and they are not messing up my day. The rules don’t bother me, so I follow them. Created by: Keegan Caban, Entertainment Editor Superbowl Traditions Anthony Hughes, News Editor Less than a week away from Super Bowl Sunday and already there is excitement throughout the NFL! Many teams played there hearts out, but now only two of them have earned a spot in Super Bowl XLVI. People are asking the same question over and over. Who’s going win the Super Bowl? Well, here are some answers. Recently, I caught up with a few students and got their predictions of whom they think is going to win the Super Bowl. My first question was, what do you do on Super Bowl Sunday? According to some students, Jalissa stated- “I sit in my fuzzy pajamas and fuzzy slippers and watch the game and eat soup.” Keegan said- “I kick back, watch the game and chill with my family.” Marcus replied- “I chill and sit back and watch the game.” Ausanae stated- “I watch the game with my family.” Next, I asked the students if they go, or have gone to any restaurants to watch the big game. According to these students, Jalissa stated, “No, I stay home.” and Michael said, “My family members come over.” Later on, I asked a student if they have any pre-game parties. According to an anonymous student, “I have friends and family over, or I go to a family member’s house to watch the game.” With that said, my final question was who they think is going to win their fourth Super Bowl victory. Well, according to some other students. Keegan said, “I think the Patriots are going to win,” and Brion said, “Patriots.” Three students that asked to remain anonymous stated,“Giants are going to win, New York Giants, and Giants are going all the way!!” Well there you have. It looks like a lot of people have more faith in the New York Giants than the New England Patriots. It looks like this is going to be a good game. I think it’s Patriots all the way!

Sports Page 6 Summit stars bring ‘A’ games to East High School Cevon McMullen, Student Liason Angelica Clinkscale, Staff Editor On the 18th our Summit Academy Knights sadly lost to the East High School Panthers. But, our Knights put up a good fight. I decided to interview Roosevelt Simmons about his thoughts on the game. I asked Roosevelt, who do you think was MVP of this game. He responded, “Jhordan Jackson because he was being the leader of the team.” All together that night our Summit Academy Knights fought a well fought battle. Roosevelt seemed to agree with that statement as he nodded his head. I asked Roosevelt how do you think the team can improve. He responded, “If we set picks and if everybody stick to their zone.” He was then asked what was your favorite play of the game,he replied, “The across court pass to Jonathan Stewart.” I teamed up with Angelica to write this article on the East vs. Summit game. I got the thoughts of Mr. Shelton and he thought that both teams did a good job, but he thinks that he could of done a better job of defense on the ball, but overall he thinks Summit did a good job offensively they had some good passes. As for East he thought East did a good job on both sides of the court. Then, I sat down with Mr. Pellegriniand he said, “We got better even though we were down in the first half.” The four people he was most impressed with was Jalen Mason, Jhordan Jackson, Rodney McMeans, and Freeman Dobyne. Entertainment Page 7 Drum line rocks into new school year Angelica Clinkscale, Staff Editor Summit is preparing to rock. Just recently, I sat down and interviewed Mr. McCarty about the new seventh period drum line. Mr. McCarty stated, “There are thirteen students on the drum line.” I then asked him if overall, who he would choose as the best drummer so far. He replied, “No one yet.” I then asked Mr. McCarty how he thought the drum line is going all together. He responded, “The drum line is going well; everyone is doing well.” When asked if we will have any upcoming concerts, he replied,” Yes, we will very shortly.” When asked out of all the instruments in the band, what was his favorite instrument to work with, he responded, “I always enjoyed working with the bass guitar.” Curious, I then asked him what made him decide to start a drum line to begin with. Mr. McCarty replied, “A lot of kids had study hall at the end of the day, so I turned that into an opportunity to work with kids”. Finally, I asked him if he enjoyed being interviewed for the school’s newspaper. He responded, “Yes I do; it makes me feel famous.” All in all, it should be quite the exciting year in the music room.
