Human beings are individualistic and self-centred by nature. • But God’s intention has always been that man should resemble God. Genesis 1:26. • Salvation and discipleship can therefore be seen as God’s effort at restoring humans to their original God-like selfless nature. Luke 14:26-27, 33

Psalm 1331 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! • 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe.3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life for evermore.
How does the Holy Spirit promote unity in the church? • He does that through giving each individual the fruit of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 • Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
This fruit is to manifest in the context of our individual differences which is accentuated by our different gifts • 1Corinthians 12:11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
How to work out this unity • It is our own responsibility to work out this unity by utilizing the fruit. • We achieve this through • Being correctly motivated Philippians 2:1 2:1Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
