%US POP. 80% 4% 14.4% 13% Notes: US percentage does not add to 100% because Hispanics are an ethnic group. Approx 60% of US Hispanics are of Mexican origin. Jordan Goodman HAWC Review - December 2007
HAWC Outreach • HAWC will continue Milagro outreach activities • HAWC will work to reach Hispanic students in the US and Mexico • We will develop materials in Spanish (Magda has already started) • We will provide bilingual websites • We will provide summer programs for student • We will target schools in New Mexico • We will work with the LMT outreach program to reach local schools in Mexico • Mexico is going to participate in the international year of the astronomy in 2009. The Mexican organizer is Deborah Dultz - a HAWC collaborator. • The UNAM Astronomy Institute has a lot of activities for high school students that HAWC can join. They have talks every Friday and visits to the optical telescopes. Jordan Goodman HAWC Review - December 2007
Summer Outreach • Working with Luis Orozco at Maryland we have joined the Mexican Division of Particles and Fields summer program run by Heriberto Castilla (CINVESTAV, FNAL) • A competition for students, undergraduate of the last two year or graduate students of the first year. They select the best according to academic capacity and interest in the field • HAWC is planning to have one or two students this year. Jordan Goodman HAWC Review - December 2007
Summary • Milagro pioneered the water-Cherenkov technique for wide field TeV gamma ray astronomy • It has made numerous discoveries, showing the importance and complementarity of a wide field instrument to the ACTs, satellites and other instruments • HAWC is an obvious next step • For a modest cost, HAWC can do important and timely physics • We have the capability, we have the site, we have the people (we even have the PMTs) • We need your approval (and the money) Jordan Goodman HAWC Review - December 2007
