What is Human Trafficking? HT is a form of modern day slavery where people profit from the control and exploitation of others. In other words, HT is the buying and selling of human beings. HT is considered to be one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world.
The Facts about Slavery • 27 million people are slaves today - Unicef • 1-1.2 million children are trafficked every year - U.S. Dept. of State, Unicef • 80% of trafficking victims are women and girls - U.S. Dept of State • 50% of trafficking victims are minors - U.S. Dept of State • Human Trafficking is the 2nd largest criminal enterprise behind drugs, and the fastest growing - U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
Types of Slavery Today Sex Trafficking:(Forced prostitution, Residential Brothels, Brothels disguised as businesses such as massage parlors, nail salons, etc.) Labor Trafficking:(Domestic workers held in a home, Farm workers forced to labor against their will, Kitchen workers in restaurants) Debt Bondage Labor: (Forced to work in order to pay back a debt or loan, Brick Kiln’s, Rice Mills, Farms) Child Soldiers:(unlawful recruitment or use of children – through force, fraud, or coercion – as combatants or for labor or sexual exploitation by armed forces)

William Wilberforce (1759-1833) Worked for over 20 yrs to end the trans-Atlantic slave trade 11 million slaves were brought via slave ships and about 1.4 died on the ships Goods sold in Africa in exchange for slaves --> slaves then sold in America to work sugar fields, cotton, etc. --> taken to Europe for sale
