The bible does not attempt to prove the existence of God: IT SIMPLY DECLARES IT! The writers of scripture accepted his existence as a settled fact. The opening line of the Bible simply reads: “In the beginning GOD......” Genesis 1:1 Belief in God is an absolute foundation not only to understanding the Bible but to life itself. It says in Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”(NIV) In other words, belief in the existence of God is a prerequisite to having personal faith in Him personally.
Some of the proofs of the existence of God are: 1. The Cosmological Argument: The law of cause and effect. The world is here, so what caused it? 2. The Teleological Argument: This takes into account designand purpose.A watch without a watchmaker or a building without a builder. Demonstrates the existence of an infinite intelligence. 3. The Anthropological Argument: Man is the Master-Piece of God’screative acts. Intelligent man is the mark of God’s creatorship.
The Ontological Argument: Man as an intelligent being, he alsohas an INTUITIVE BELIEF and KNOWLEDGE of the existence of God. There is a instinct to worship God. The Moral Argument Mankind possess a inner sense ofRIGHT andWRONG. Thevery existence of conscience. 6. The Biological Argument: A fact thatLIFE can only come from PRE-EXISTENT LIFE not from just matter.
The Historical Argument:Human history points to an UNSEEN HAND,guiding, controlling and governing nations. The Christological Argument: The Christ of HISTORY is a fact and it is impossible to explain JesusChrist apart from God’s existence. The Biological Argument: The Bible is a WITNESSto the existence of God. 10. The Congruity Argument:The AGREEMENTand HARMONYof the nine previous arguments.
What is the Nature of God? Although we cannot fully understand God, we still can know Him. We know Him through a personal relationship of faith and through a study of what the Bible teaches about His nature. God may be described in terms of attributes. An attribute is an inherent characteristic of a person or being. While we cannot describe God in a comprehensive way, we can learn about Him by examining His attributes as revealed in the Bible. The first group is known as the natural attributes of God.
What are the attributes and qualities of God? God Is SPIRIT taught that "God is Spirit" ( John 4:24). God has no body, no physical or measurable form. Thus, God is invisible. He became visible in human form in the person of Jesus Christ, but His essence is invisible. God Is UNCHANGEABLE. Progress and change may characterize some of His works, but God Himself remains unchanged (Heb. 1:12). He does not change; otherwise, He would not be perfect. Thus, what we know of God can be known with certainty. He is not different from one time to another.
God Is ALL POWERFUL . God's power is unlimited. He can do anything that is not inconsistent with His nature, character, and purpose (Gen. 17:1; 18:14). The only limitations on God's power are imposed by Himself (Gen. 18:25). "Impossible" is not in God's vocabulary. God creates and sustains all things; yet He never grows weary (Is. 40:27-31). God Is ALL KNOWING , God possesses all knowledge (Job 38:39; Rom. 11:33-36). Because God is everywhere at one and the same time, He knows everything simultaneously. That God has the power to know the thoughts and motives of every heart is evident from many Scripture passages, notably (Job 37:16, Psalm 147:5), and (Hebrews 3:13). God Is EVERYWHERE . God is not confined to any part of the universe but is present in all His power at every point in space and every moment in time (Ps. 139:7-12). Thus, God does not belong to any one nation or generation. He is the God of all the earth (Gen. 18:25).
God Is ETERNAL . Eternity refers to God's relation to time. Past, present, and future are known equally to Him (2 Pet. 3:8; Rev. 1:8). Time is like a parade that man sees only a segment at a time. But God sees time in its entirety.
The second group of attributes is called moral attributes. These refer to God's character, His essential nature. God Is HOLY . The word holy comes from a root word that means "to separate." Thus, it refers to God as separated from or exalted above other things (Is. 6:1-3). Holiness refers to God's moral excellence. Being holy, God demands holiness in His own children. And what He demands, He supplies. Holiness is God's gift that we receive by faith through His Son, Jesus Christ (Eph. 4:24).
God Is RIGHTEOUSNESS. Righteousness as applied to God refers to His affirmation of what is right as opposed to what is wrong. The righteousness of God refers to His moral laws laid down to guide the conduct of humankind, as in the Ten Commandments. Righteousness also refers to God's administration of justice. He brings punishment upon the disobedient (Gen. 18:25; Deut. 32:4; Rom. 2:6-16). Finally, God's righteousness is redemptive. In the Book of Romans the righteousness of God refers to God declaring the believer to be in a state of righteousness as though he had never been unrighteous (Rom. 1:16-17; 3:24-26). This is possible because of the sacrificial death of Jesus on our behalf.
God Is LOVE . Love is the essential, self-giving nature of God. God's love for man seeks to awaken a responsive love of man for God. Divine love runs like a golden thread through the entire Bible. Nature is eloquent with the skill, wisdom, and power of God. Only in the Bible, however, do we discover God giving Himself and all He possesses to His creatures, in order to win their response and to possess them for Himself. God loved and gave; He loved and sought-- just as a shepherd seeks his sheep. God loved and suffered, providing His love by giving His all on the cross for the redemption of humanity. God, in His love, wills good for all His creatures (Gen. 1:31; Ps. 145:9 ; Mark 10:18)
God Is TRUTH . All truth, whether natural, physical, or religious, is grounded in God. Thus, any seemingly inconsistent teaching between natural and physical sciences and God's revelation of Himself is more apparent than real. Truth is magnified in an absolute way through God's revelation. God Is WISDOM . God's wisdom is revealed in His doing the best thing, in the best way, at the best time for the best purpose. Some people have knowledge, but little wisdom, while the most wise at times have little knowledge. But God is "the only wise God" (1 Tim. 1:17). In creation, history, human lives, redemption, and Christ, His divine wisdom is revealed. Man, lacking wisdom, can claim God's wisdom simply by asking (1 Kin. 3:9; James 1:5). The believer's understanding of God continues to increase throughout his earthly pilgrimage. It will finally be complete in eternity when he stands in the presence of God.
God is LIGHT.(1John 1:5) It is important to understand that God’s manifested glory is as a white brilliance. Light can not get any brighter than white. White in the Bible always depicts the absolute pureness and holiness of God. His holiness is impossible to defile for light dispels all darkness.
What is the eternal Godhead? An old English term that is a synonym for God, with an emphasis on that which makes the triune God essentially one (Rom. 1:20; Col. 2:9). The apostle Paul used the term to show the contrast between God's sinless nature and the corrupt character of man and his tendency toward idolatry. In (Romans 1:20) Paul used the term Godhead to describe what mankind ought to see in nature as a result of God's creative handiwork--" His eternal power and Godhead," or "Deity." This entire passage in Romans describes how the human mind fails to understand the exalted Godhead because of its sinful rebellion and distortion of truth.
The God of the Bible is described as one God. As clearly as the Bible teaches that God is one, so clearly do the same Scriptures teach that God is three. The Bible teaches TRI-UNITY of God. The union of three in one. Gen 1:26-27 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.(NIV) The Godhead speaks of God’s own mode of being. The important thing to remember is that the Godhead cannot be revealed by our natural understanding. It must come by spiritual revelation through the Word of God. The three persons of the Godhead are: The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.
A. The FATHER is God, a distinct person. He is eternal, self-existent, invisible and is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. B. The SON is God, a distinct person, co-equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He is the personality made visible by the incarnation. He is pre-existent before the world began. The Son is to praised and worshipped as God. Matt 14:33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."(NIV) Heb 1:6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."(NIV) 2 Pet 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (NIV)
C. The Holy Spiritis God, a distinct person, co-equal with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is not just an influence, although He does influence our behavior! Many believers are robbed of a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit because they consider the Spirit to be an impersonal influence, power or energy. The Holy Spirit is spoken of with personal pronouns, qualities, acts, titles and feelings, His ministry is to convict and to convert man as well as to reveal the Son and the Father to the believer. The Holy Spirit is a divine person. He is God indwelling the believer and working within us to fulfill the will of God.
Mark 3:28-29 I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."(NIV) Ephesians 4:30 Grieve Romans 8:26-27 Mind and Emotions 1 Corinthians 12:11 Will
Consider the following scriptures that reveal the three distinct in the Godhead. Matt 3:16-17 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."(NIV) The Father THE VOICE The Son JESUS The Holy Spirit THE DOVE
Matt 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.""(NIV) Eph 2:18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.(NIV) I Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.(KJV)
There are other illustrations that might help us relate to this three-in-one nature of God. 1. NATURAL illustrations of the TRI-UNITY A. MAN-one being yet three-fold- BODY, SOUL and SPIRIT. Two invisible parts and one visible B. WATER -one unity manifested in three forms- LIQUID, ICE and STEAM. All can be manifested at the same time. C. ATOM -one component(the smallest) of an element consisting of three properties. PROTON , NEUTRONand ELECTRON. D. TRIANGLE -one complete figure with three equal sides, all Co-equal.
2. BIBLICAL illustrations of the TRI-UNITY(types and symbols) A. NOAH’S ARCH -one vessel with three floors(Genesis 6:14-22) The Father first floor FOUNDATION The Son second floor THE DOOR The Holy Spirit third floor WINDOW B. ARCH OF COVENANT LID -one piece of beaten gold The Father CHERUB The Son MERCY SEAT The Holy Spirit CHERUB C. HEAVENLY BODIES -one universe The Father SUN(GLORIOUS LIGHT) The Son MOON (REFLECTED GLORY) The Holy Spirit STARS (EVER PRESENCE)
What is the name of God? There is also a name mention in Scripture that shows the unity of the Godhead. That name is the: Lord Jesus Christ The Father is theLORD Exod 3:15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers-- the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob-- has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.(NIV)
Isa 42:8 "I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols.(NIV) Luke 10:21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.(NIV)
The Son is JESUS Matt 1:20-23 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.“ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-- which means, "God with us."(NIV) Prov 30:4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know!(NIV)
The Name of the Holy SpiritCHRIST Acts 10:36-38 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached--how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. (NIV) Col 1:25-27 I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness--the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.(NIV)
There have been misconceptions about saying the name of God is the Lord Jesus Christ, but there in no other name in scripture that better describes a triune God than the name LORD JESUS CHRIST. God’s nature is also revealed to us by some better known names of the old testament. The Hebrew name of Jehovah (its transliterated from YHWH) is used over 6,000 times in the Old Testament, most commonly translated Lord. When the word appears in conjunction with other terms our understanding of His relationship to us increases. For Example:
Jehovah JIREH -the Lord our PROVIDER (Genesis 22:13) Jehovah RAPHA -the Lord our HEALER (Exodus 15:26) Jehovah NISSI -the Lord our BANNER (VICTORY) (Exodus 17:15) Jehovah SHALOM -the Lord our PEACE (Judges 17:15) Jehovah RAAH -the Lord our SHEPHERD (Psalm 23:1) Jehovah TSIDKENU -the Lord our RIGHTEOUNESS (Jeremiah 23:6) Jehovah SHAMMAH -the Lord is PRESENT (Ezekiel 48:35) Jehovah MEKADDSCHEM -the Lord our SANTIFACATION (Exodus 31:3)
