The Argument • There has been a compelling debate in our country concerning whether or not the use of marijuana should be legalized. • A considerable amount of Americans are on board with the idea of legalization, and have strong views about the benefits of taking this action. • However, there are also a significant amount of Americans who argue the potential negative effects that it will have on our country, and have concerns for the possible health risks.

  3. Yes: it should be legalized • When used in moderation, it is considerably less harmful than tobacco or alcohol. • Limiting the drug is a violation of the personal freedom of Americans. • Legalization leads to lower price, therefore theoretically lower crime rate. • Benefits of medical uses, especially in regards to cancer. • Reduction of street justice due to drug disputes. • Potential source for tax revenues. • Give civil courts more time to deal with more serious cases.

  4. Yes: it should be legalized • Drug dealers and terrorists would lose business. • FDA regulation would insure quality and safety of the drug. • For some people it is one of life’s pleasures much like sex, alcohol, cigarettes, or food. • In addition to recreational use, there are many industrial, and commercial uses of the crop. • Drug busts in a flawed judicial system has turned young people into life long criminals.

No: it should not be legalized • Marijuana is often used as a stepping stone or “gateway drug” leading to harder drugs. • Driving under the influence, as well as other dangers, and crimes will be increased. • Considered morally wrong. • It will increase the chances of the drug falling into the hands of children.

No: it should not be legalized • Due to drug related arrests, criminals who commit drug related crimes, and are likely to commit more serious crimes have been take off the streets. • Those users who abuse the drug would undergo physical damage. • Increase dangers of secondhand smoke. • Could possibly lead to legalization of harder drugs down the road.
