Energy Production in Stars

Energy Production in Stars. Physics 113 Goderya. Chapter(s):11 Learning Outcomes:. The Source of Stellar Energy. Recall from our discussion of the sun: Stars produce energy by nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium. In the sun, this happens primarily through the proton-proton (PP) chain.

  1. Energy Production in Stars Physics 113 Goderya Chapter(s):11 Learning Outcomes:

  2. The Source of Stellar Energy Recall from our discussion of the sun: Stars produce energy by nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium. In the sun, this happens primarily through the proton-proton (PP) chain

  3. The CNO Cycle In stars slightly more massive than the sun, a more powerful energy generation mechanism than the PP chain takes over: The CNO Cycle.

  4. Energy Transport Energy generated in the star’s center must be transported to the surface. Outer layers (including photosphere): Convection Inner layers: Radiative energy transport Bubbles of hot gas rising up Cool gas sinking down Gas particles of solar interior g-rays

  5. Conduction, Convection, and Radiation (SLIDESHOW MODE ONLY)
