Research Matters (it really does)
Recent events (1) • Five year research plan • Initial draft (Feb 05) well received but required more reference to university research strategy and current research themes • Final submission (May 05) accepted • Now on web
Recent events (2a) • Science@Reading Research Themes • Submitted three themes this year • Computational Science • Cognitive Systems • Informatics • Informatics, important area but does not warrant a specific theme • Cognitive Systems, needs development for resubmission next year • Computational Science provisionally accepted but concerns over sources of funding; going forward
Recent events (2a) • Three new themes suggested from School for Science@Reading Research Themes • Computational Science • provisionally accepted but concerns over sources of funding; going forward • Cognitive Systems • needs development for resubmission next year • Informatics • important area but does not warrant a specific theme • Biological Systems theme accepted with input from PEDAL on computation
Recent events (3) • Budget • Major revision in SDA and travel allocations for 2004/05 financial year • No new studentships awarded – lack of return • RETF applications will continue to receive financial support from SRC • Research Development Manager • An ‘in house’ Hannah Prior • To be appointed subject to acceptance of budget • To be actioned
Recent events (4) • RAE tracking • Jan 2005 (and henceforth annually) • Submission of publications in RAE period • Friday (24th June) • Submission of selected four publications for “research active” staff on census date
Future events (1) • RAE tracking will continue • RAE guidelines indicate that more emphasis will be placed on publications in 2008 than before • Still be measured on other categories • Funding • PG throughput • Evidence of esteem
Future events (2) • Full Economic Costing • Example: EPSRC grant with 100k direct costs • Pre 2005 • + 46% overhead = 146k 23% to University = 23k 23% to School = 23k • EPSRC grant with full economic costs • Includes full cost of PIs • Buildings etc • Total estimated to be 280k • Larger return estimated to School • 20% to PVC[R] for redistribution to SDAs or salary topup • Removal of QR ?!? (currently 80k/annum to SRC)
