Effect of drought vs dry conditions vs wet conditions

Effect of drought vs dry conditions vs wet conditions. Drought = Soil conditions too dry for much nitrate uptake by plant Dry conditions = Sufficient rainfall for decent yields, but not sufficient rainfall for much loss on nitrate from field

  1. Effect of drought vs dry conditions vs wet conditions Drought = Soil conditions too dry for much nitrate uptake by plant Dry conditions = Sufficient rainfall for decent yields, but not sufficient rainfall for much loss on nitrate from field Wet conditions = Much loss of nitrate due to leaching and denitrification

  2. Drought vs Dry Conditions vs Wet Conditions Effect on CSNT values • Drought = low stalk values • Dry conditions = excessive CSNT values • Wet conditions = low stalk values

  3. In drought conditions N uptake is reduced

  4. 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Dry Wet Dry

  5. Remember: The CSNT measures the nitrate the plant took up, not what was applied or available in the soil.

  6. Increasingly dry soil conditions Dry Drought MN IA MO IL IN

  7. Average results from 11 N strip trials in Northeastern Indiana in 2012

  8. What conditions help cause low plant uptake of nitrate in drought year? Application of nitrogen fertilizer into dry soil or on surface

  9. Should CSNT samples be collected in a season with drought? NO! Not worth the money. Results do not help to manage N next year. We collect CSNT in a drought year because we are contractually obligated, and because we use results for education and research. Might collect CSNT on selected fields to have a complete history of CSNT on field. In Connecticut CSNT required for nutrient management plan under EQIP.
