  3. Each member of the Directory had a 3-month term • The Directory does a poor job and comes close to bankruptcy by 1796 • The Directory hopes to improve matters through military conquest Problems

  4. The Directory appoints Napoleon Bonaparte to lead invasions into Austria and Italy • These countries had disapproved of the French Revolution or plotted against France • Napoleon also invades Egypt in 1798-1799 Napoleon Bonaparte
