  1. How to Unlock BitLocker Encrypted Drive & Recover Data When BitLocker encryption is turned on, stored data on the encrypted volume turns unreadable. To make it readable again, users need to authenticate themselves by providing the correct Bitlocker password, BitLocker recovery key or Startup key that helps to unlock the storage. When you start up the OS or try to get into an external device that BitLocker protects, you have to enter a password. It is only given by the user the first time BitLocker is set up. The system creates an unique 48-digit BitLocker recovery key when BitLocker is turned on for the first time for a storage device. This key is also known as a Microsoft or BitLocker recovery key. If you lose the password or don't have a password, you can use it to decode the data even if you don't have the password itself. This is how the BitLocker key itself look: ******-******-******-******-******-******-******-******. A Startup key is a hidden *.bek file on a USB drive that works the same way as a BitLocker recovery key. The boot partition can be automatically decrypted without the user having to enter a password.
