  4. Notes • Balance must be on a flat level surface. • Be sure and zero the balance. • Add the mass of each beam to obtain the total mass.

  7. Units of Measurement • Meter (m) • Kilometer (km) • Centimeter (cm) • Millimeter (mm)

  8. Notes • 1 meter = 100 cm • 1 cm = 10mm • Smallest line equals a millimeter • The numbers are centimeters • The width of the nail bed on the pinky finger is approximately 1cm. • Read from zero line (not necessarily the end of the ruler).

  10. Measures: • Liquid volume = the amount of space the liquid occupies (i.e. takes up). • Graduated cylinder gives a more precise (exact) measurement.

  12. Notes • Place on flat level surface. • Read at eye level from bottom of meniscus. • Meniscus is formed from water adhering to the sides of the container due to the polarity of water.
