Tailored Arrivals (aka: “Dynamic STAR”) • Tailored arrival — key features: • Continuous descent from cruise altitude to touchdown • Tailored for traffic, environment, … • Controller-to-aircraft communication by data link* • Definition of flight path in both time and space (4D) • Flight path through multiple centers • Benefits: • 590 Kg (777) – 1043 Kg (747) less fuel per flight (FTA) • 171 Kg (777) – 500 Kg (747) less fuel per flight (PTA) • Flight duration reduced by several minutes • Dramatically reduced VHF voice communication • Overall efficiency improved • Important step toward modernization of ATM *If ATC does not have data link, tailored arrivals can still be achieved by using pre-negotiated set of standard arrival procedures pre-stored in FMS.

Summary Statements for SFO TAs • A total 368 TAs have been flown from December 21st to June 5th at SFO • TAs at SFO receive no preferential treatment • From the week of December 10, 2007 to April 14, 2007 approximately 30% of all aircraft flying TAs flew full TAs. • 70% were partial TAs • Airlines believe that there is significant benefit achieved through partial TAs • Partial TAs – Broken off mostly due to traffic and weather • Procedures have been developed to rejoin aircraft to the TA that were broken off • The official Boeing benefits report will be release soon. • The FAA will use that report and other data for creating the official FAA business case

Flight Profile Description 2) If situation permits, Controller up-links Tailored Arrival clearance via CPDLC • [Atlantic X TA] At [SUMRS] cleared [ROUTE CLEARANCE] maintain FL[xxx] • [ROUTE CLEARANCE] includes lateral route, crossing restrictions, approach procedure, and runway assignment • Boeing ACAT captures ADS-C data at 6-min intervals, changing to 1-min intervals in the descent, for post-flight monitoring. 

  14. Flight Profile Description 3) Flight crew loads Tailored Arrival clearance into FMS and reviews • If acceptable, crew activates route in FMS and downlinks “wilco” • If unacceptable, crew downlinks “unable”. 

  15. Flight Profile Description 4) Crew receives updated cruise/descent winds, covering at least • Cruise wind @ last cruise point (e.g. SUMRS) • Descent wind bands, e.g. for 100 ft, FL100, FL 180, FL 250 

  16. Flight Profile Description 5) Aircrew selects a descent speed schedule of 280-300kts above 10,000ft 

  17. Flight Profile Description 6) Oceanic sector hands-off to MIA Center • CPDLC and ADS disconnected • On contact with MIA, aircrew checks in:“AAL123 on the Atlantic 1 TA” • On radar contact MIA Center controller advises:“AAL123 cleared via the Atlantic 1 TA. Maintain FL[current flight level] 

  18. Flight Profile Description 7) If controller wants to add speed control to allow Tailored Arrival, advises pilot to expect a restriction, e.g.“AAL123, Expect to descend at XXXkts” 

  19. Flight Profile Description 8) Controller issues descent clearance along cleared route:“AAL123 descend via the Atlantic 1 TA. Report leaving [current flight level]”If speed restriction is needed, e.g. “AAL123, Cleared to descend via Atlantic 1 TA, maintain XXXkts in the descent, Miami altimeter XXXX”Flight crew monitors the FMS for vertical profile compliance and reports leaving the assigned altitude. 
