    1. Salvage and Overhaul 4322.1 through 4322.4 Bob Kernaghan

    2. Safety Considerations 4322.1 Dangerous Building Conditions Personnel Protection Logistics Pulling walls and ceilings

    3. Dangerous Building Conditions Weakened floors and stairways Weakened steel structural members (500 degrees) Decomposed mortar / Chimneys Gussets pulled out of wooden truss system Roof mounted equipment

    4. Personnel Protection Full PPE Use SCBA - Higher levels of toxic gasses than during fire Pace yourself Use fresh crew if possible

    5. Logistics Bring in Lighting Holes Tripping Hazards Stairways Any other danger areas R & R station

    6. Pulling walls and ceilings Make sure area is clear of other people Do not pull too much at one time Do not pull structural members without coordinating with command Beware of energized electrical lines and water lines in concealed spaces

    7. Overhaul Making buildings and areas safe Searching for hidden fires Extinguishing hidden fires

    8. Making Buildings and Areas Safe 4322.2 Carefully inspect for: Sagging floors or ceilings Bulging or cracked walls Weakened roofs Loose cornices and overhangs

    9. Securing the Structure Weak areas should be put off limits Shore or brace unstable walls or ceilings Holes in floors or stairways should be barricaded Utilities shut off Sharp objects – mitigate, barricade, warning tape (Yellow and Black)

    10. Securing the Contents Stock on weakened shelving Overhead hazards Weatherproof the structure / contents Turn structure over to owners or law enforcement

    11. Securing the Exterior Possible building collapse Isolate and deny entry at least 1 ˝ times the height. Remove valuable property within potential collapse area. Downed Electric Lines Minimum 25’ exclusion area Yellow and Black tape

    12. Quiz 4322.2 What must be done before allowing occupants to take possession of the building? Make sure building is safe. Repair or mark any hazards at the site.

    13. What should you do about an unsafe area? Make off-limits to personnel What should be done with holes in floors and stairways? Hazard tape and barricade

    14. What should you do if you suspect damage to utilities? Turn off / notify utility companies On suspicious fire, what should you do before turning the building back to the occupants? Call for an investigator

    15. Searching for Hidden Fire 4322.3 Sight Peeling paint Discoloration Smoke from cracks Hearing Popping or crackling Hissing of steam

    16. Touch – feel with back of hand Walls Ceilings Floors Doors Instruments Heat detectors TIC Wear SCBA Toxic gasses Oxygen deficiency

    17. Common concealed spaces Walls Partitions Attics Cocklofts Basements False ceilings Below floors Air shafts Elevator shafts Pipe chases Ducts Around merchandise Under debris In appliances and machinery

    18. If a Hidden Fire is Suspected You must gain entry Pulling walls and ceilings Resulting damage is minor compared to a rekindle Do not cut structural members If a burned member extends into an adjacent occupancy, check next door Remove covering over burned structural members until unburned portion is reached

    19. Quiz 4322.3 Three senses used to detect hidden fire? Sight, Hearing, Touch Why wear SCBA Toxic gasses, Oxygen deficiency What part of hand feels for heat? Back of hand Give three examples of hidden spaces. (Look ‘em up!)

    20. Extinguishing Hidden Fires 4322.4 Full PPE & SCBA Hoselines – smaller lines OK Burning debris Dunk smaller items in sink/tub Take larger items (mattresses) outside Inform investigator before moving Take care in dusty environements Hay/cotton bales Wettng agents Heavy equipment to separate

    21. Quiz 4322.4 Do not remove SCBA until … Clear of combustion by-products Use _______ handlines in overhaul. Smaller Before moving items, notify … Fire investigation Upolstered furniture is more easily extinguished if you add a … Wetting agent Stirring up a lot of of dust can cause an … Explosion

    22. Salvage and overhaul are important responsibilities of the fire service Minimize property loss Prevent rekindle Mitigate hazards Public Relations Be safe! Tired firefighters get hurt Mark and barricade hazards Wear PPE SCBA

    23. Material based on the CDF 4300 training manual. The authors of this power point grant permission for use in training.
