  9. Working Definitions • Bioproduct: • Any product derived from living material. This includes not only conventional forest products such as lumber, pulp and paper, OSB, MDF, bioenergy and wood pellets but more especially innovative products such as value-added wood products, thermal wood, composite materials, new engineered wood products, ethanol, biochemicals, natural products, pharmaceuticals, nutriceuticals etc.

Working Definitions • Bioeconomy: • The production of conventional and innovative bioproducts, including the culture and harvesting of raw biomaterials for feedstock, biomass procurement, transportation and harvesting, bioenergy production, marketing, sales and distribution, and all ancillary services required to support these activities.

  12. Working Definitions • Clients: • Those companies, entrepreneurs, agencies and individuals to whom we provide commercialization services. These services could include providing information, advice and mentoring; introductions to service providers, technical resources, research and development resources, funding agencies and potential customers. Services could potentially also include the preparation of business plans and grant applications.

  16. In the Past iiON has: • Provided strategic advice and support to Northern Ontario’s bioeconomic development through: • Assisting with the development of natural product research and commercialization efforts involving a number of organizations i.e. GLFC, OFRI, NOSM, UWO, private sector.

  17. In the Past iiON has: • Provided strategic advice and support to Northern Ontario’s bioeconomic development through: • Representing the interests of Northern Ontario at a number of conferences and workshops across the province.

  19. In the Past iiON has: • Made the case to Algoma University on the benefits of establishing a Research Chair in Natural Product Chemistry • Initiated the start of a growing partnership with UWO & their BIOTRON facility – now two major CFI apps from Algoma (Natural Health Products)

In the Past iiON has: • Initiated the start of a growing partnership with UWO Research Park. • Organized a significant workshop in SSM in biorefining attracting participants from North and South Ontario and Quebec representing universities, private industry, forestry organizations and not for profits.

  21. In the Past iiON has: • Provided local businesses such as St. Mary’s, FlakeBoard, Sault Disposal, Forest BioProducts Inc. and other organizations including seA and ULERN with technical advice on biomass processing technologies.

  22. Currently iiON is: • Strongly supporting the development of a proposal to create a bioeconomy geoportal as a comprehensive economic development tool. (could be multi-year & multi-$$) • Providing funding to support bioproducts and health sector directories from SSMIC

  23. Current iiON Projects: • Chapleau Biomass Project – • 10 mW net gasification engine-generation project using plasma torch gas cleaning technology. First commercial demonstration of this technology. • Ready for financing • SITTM Biodiesel • Established client with SSMIC • Ready to develop commercial scale production unit
