How we work in coastal towns • Retaining young people in the areaby coaching more young people to become aware of their untapped skills and using these to develop new horizons • Utilising the skills of the elderly population in mentoring young people towards becoming more resilient and maintaining a positive life progression • Helping todecrease youth employment levelsthrough providing pre-employment training and self-employment opportunities • Raising levels of entrepreneurship through business start-up and growth mentoring • Helping to address the issues of seasonality by working with businesses to develop a seasonal marketplaces • Encouraging stronger local supply chains by coaching local businesses in forging and strengthening closer economic relationships with established industry sectors

Case Study 1 - Blackpool (North-West) • Issues:A particular issue in Blackpool being the numbers of young people moving into the town to access Accommodation in the private rented sector and seasonal employment and being disconnected with the community . • 50% 0f young people NEET aged 16-17 (200) moved into the town during Year 10 and 11 .  • Many young people attending Prince’s Trust programmes are single living on their own without any family and certainly no relationship with a meaningful adult • Title: Community Leadership and Mentoring Programme • Theme: Enabling access to group activities and one-to-one mentoring • Key Stats: 355 young people over the year three period • This year we have worked with 120 young people, recruited and trained 8 mentors from Blackpool Football Club, recruited two Young Ambassadors and • worked with eight partner organisations.

Key Partnership working High Sheriff of Lancashire, Peter Mileham and a group of local major employers and organisations to launch ‘Project Bonanza’, aimed at getting more young people into employment and support for young offenders. Developing an event with Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services, Blackpool and Fylde College and many private sector employers to help focus attention on what needs to be done in Blackpool to support young people. Community Impact Blade Free Blackpool saw five young men come together to create a project to highlight the dangers of knife crime in and around the Blackpool area by running interactive workshops in schools and within the local community. This involved working with the audience to create anti violent crime advertising campaigns. Decorating the changing rooms and club house at South Shore Football Club Building an outdoor area at Donna’s Dream House, a holiday home for terminally ill children and their families, in partnership with volunteer joiners from Kirkham prison. Renovating Staining Scout Hut

Case Study 2 – Torbay (South-West) Issues:Organisations operating independently of each other to tackle disadvantage in coastal areas, where the target group and their issues are a shared problem, There was a need in Torbay to develop committed partnerships that will support local disadvantaged young people into the jobs created through local regeneration initiatives. Title: Local Regeneration Initiatives with Torbay Development Agency Theme: Bringing the labour market closer to local industry Key Stats: This year we have worked with 113 young people, Key Partnership working: The partnership links our Enterprise Programme into TDA incubation and innovation centre such as Cockington Court and Lymington Road, and provides Get Into programmes into local growth sectors, including hospitality. We are using Development Awards to link to local coastal community industries such as Seamanship courses and security training for nightclubs linked to the local hospitality sector.

Dream Comes True for Unemployed Ceris Who Turns Hobby Into Business • An unemployed woman from Paignton has pursued her dream of becoming a jewellery designer with help from The Prince’s Trust and Torbay Development Agency. • After leaving school with just two GCSEs, Ceris didn’t expect to be a success. • Ceris went to college to study art and design, but still didn’t know how to turn her passion for arts and crafts into a career. • She tried a few different courses and went from part-time job to part-time job, feeling increasingly lost and unfulfilled. • But things started to change for Ceris when, at 22, she made herself a bracelet using beads she had bought from a local shop. • She says: “People commented on the bracelet and started asking me to make jewellery for them, too. I realised that maybe there was potential turn my hobby into a business.” • However, with few qualifications and no business experience or funding, Ceris didn’t know how to turn her idea into a reality.

Case Study 3 – Individual Projects (North East & East of England) • Get Into Lifeguarding – Clacton-on Sea, East of England • Swim Fitness Tests • Learning about beach safety and risk assessing • The Fairbridge Programme John Muir Discovery Award Follow On Activity (Seal Sands Hartlepool) • young people learnt about conserving a wild place • young tree care at Tees Mouth National Nature Reserve.  • involved weeding, replacing spiral guards and mulching. • taking part in a litter pick at Seal Sands. • Get Into Sailing – Hartlepool, North East • 1 week programme of sailing delivered in partnership with the Ocean New Trust.  • learning how to sail a boat.  • living on the boat sailing from Hartlepool Marina and around the North Coast.

Case Study 4: East Lindsey (East Midlands) • Issues faced by young people in starting business: • Often too expensive to secure premises or rental units. • Travelling distances are a real challenge: a mobile hair-dressing business in Skegness would have to work to a 15-mile radius, three times that in a city • Sustainable Growth: Due to the seasonality of seaside towns, even though a lot of businesses are now staying open for the full 12 months of the year only a handful of these are profitable. • Lack of consistently positive influence • Agricultural Fortress: It is difficult to break into the agricultural sector as initial price of land and equipment is very high. • There has been high levels of redundancies from large firms: equals more competition to win contracts; increasingly more difficult to break into building trade
