  16. How to Apply to College

  17. The first thing you will do, is click on the FERPA Agreement link.

  18. FERPA Agreement • Be sure to print the FERPA form and return to counselor to waive your right to access letter. • No counselor can write you a letter of rec without this form on file. • Also, be sure to give one to any teacher who will be writing you a letter. • Students who do not waive their right will receive a generic, neutral letter.

  19. Begin by clicking on the “colleges” tab.

  20. Next, click on the “colleges I’m applying to” link If you can’t see this link it is because you are using your parents login info.

  21. If you intend to apply to a Common Application school, read this additional FERPA agreement carefully, then check one of these boxes. If you do not intend to apply to ANY Common App schools, you can skip this step. You must create a Common Application username by going to their website.

  22. At the bottom of the FERPA you must enter your Common App username and password. This is how your info from Naviance will be connected to your application.

  23. If you have never used this page, start with “add colleges to this list”.

  24. Add your college list by using the “lookup” feature.

  25. You can browse colleges by state, country, or name.

  26. Choose a type of admission and be sure to check what each school offers. Remember… Early Decision- (Binding, only apply early to 1 school) Early Action- (Non-Binding, Can apply EA to other schools) Single Choice EA-(Non-Binding, cannot apply to other schools early)

  27. After you find the school and select the admission type, click “Add Colleges”.

  28. Make sure that your college list is ACCURATE! Your counselors and teachers will refer to this list as needed for deadlines.

  29. To find the teacher and counselor brag packets, click on the “about me” tab.

  30. Click on the brag packet to the left that you wish to complete first.

  31. Complete every question and pay close attention to deadlines.

  32. For a teacher recommendation, be sure to complete all the questions as well. For questions that ask for specifics in a class, use separate paragraphs for each teacher and devote equal time to both.

  33. Once your brag packets are done, return to your college list and scroll down to the bottom and click on “add/cancel requests”.

  34. Select your teachers and COUNSELORS from the pull down menu here. This will send them an email notifying them that the brag packet is done. Be sure to ask them in person first, before sending the email, as a courtesy.

  35. Don’t forget to select “Update Requests” once you teachers and counselor have been selected.

  36. Requesting Letters of Recommendation • Once again, you MUST speak with the recommender (i.e. teacher or counselor) before completing your brag packet and submit to them the signed FERPA agreement form. • Common Application schools must be completed through Naviance, NO ENVELOPES REQUIRED!!!

  37. Schools NOT on the Common Application • Letters of recommendation are needed for private and some out of state schools only. • Be sure to add all colleges you are applying to on Naviance under your college list. • For these colleges and universities you must bring in: • a stamped (3) and addressed 8½ x 11 envelope for each college. • Each schools secondary school report. • A transcript requested through the registrars office. **Remember, UC/CSU Schools do not accept letters of recommendation
