  4. Transcripts Check your transcripts for the following: • Correct Name, Address • Off campus classes • Credits • Grades • Courses taken in the correct year • Graduation Status • CSIS ID # = SSID # (UC System Only)

  5. General High School Requirements • Complete a minimum of 230 credits. • Complete all course requirements. • Pass the California High School Exit Exam in: • Language Arts • Mathematics • Passing Algebra I is a state mandated graduation requirement.

  6. Required High School Courses • English: 4 years • Science: 2 years (Life, Physical) • Mathematics: 3 years (must complete Alg 1) • History: 3 years • PE: 2 years • Health: 1 semester • Practical Art: 1 semester • VPA: 1 year • Electives: 7 classes needed

  7. Summer School Courses at TPHS • Some summer school courses are offered for repeat and acceleration through TPHS. • Information is available in March in the counseling office. • Courses offered for acceleration have a limited space available. A lottery may be used to fill these spaces.

  8. Off Campus Courses • Students must receive approval from their counselor prior to taking a class off campus. • The off campus permission form must be signed by a parent and on record with the counselor. • Students may also take courses at the local community colleges. • Students may only take up to 30 credits off campus at other high schools or colleges. • Language courses that are not offered at TPHS do not count toward the 30 credit maximum

STAR TestingApril 2008 Early Assessment Program (EAP) • Optional portion of STAR exam • Assesses students in Math and English for course placement at CSU campuses • Students who voluntarily answer the English multiple choice questions must also complete a 45 min. essay in a separate booklet at a separate time. • Highly recommended to participate

  11. Why take the EAP test? • Earn an exemption from the CSU required English and/or math placement exams. • Identify additional preparation needed for college level courses. • Adjust senior-year coursework to prepare for college-level courses.

  13. Community Colleges • IGETC Program: Guarantees admission to specific UC campuses and CSU campuses • TAG Program: Honors program guarantees admission to specific UC campuses

  14. California State Universities (CSU) • 23 campuses • Applicants must meet the A-G subject requirements • Apply online @ www.csumentor.edu • Admission determined by eligibility index: SAT (V&M) + (800 x GPA*) = 2900 or above (10 x composite ACT score) + (200 x GPA*) = 694 or above * 10-12 GPA

UC/CSU Subject Requirements • A: History/ Social Science: 2 years required • B: English: 4 years required • C: Math: 3 years required/ 4 yrs recommended • D: Lab Science: 2yrs required/ 3 recommended • E: Foreign Language: 2 yrs required/ 3 yrs recommended • F: Visual/ Performing Arts: 1 year required • G: Electives: 1 year required

  18. “D” Grades UC and CSU campuses consider a D grade in a required subject a Subject Omission. Students who have received a D grade in a required course need to repeat the course in order to be eligible to apply to a UC or CSU campus… HOWEVER…there are exceptions… • Math • World Languages *See your counselor for specific information*

  19. Private/ Out of State College Options • Admission requirements vary by institution 2. Often use “committee” type admission process 3. Students should check with individual campuses to determine admission requirements & deadlines 4. Many campuses use the Common Application (Visit www.commonapp.org for more information) 5. Download TPHS letter of Recommendation packet (available at www.tphs.net)

  20. Letter of Recommendation Packet • Purpose of Letter of Recommendation • Only for private and out of state colleges & Universities- UC/ CSU do not accept letters of recommendation • Available online at www.tphs.net

  21. Committee Selection vs. Eligibility Index Committee Selection- Private/ Out of State Student applicants are reviewed in the context of their entire application. Extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities and community service play a significant role. Eligibility Index- CSU Campuses use a mathematical equation to determine eligibility, primarily based on GPA and test scores. Index will vary by campus. Comprehensive Review- UC Campuses review students based on specific criteria (varies by campus). Please visit individual UC campus website to read detailed information on each campuses’ comprehensive review process.

College Admission Testing Requirements www.fairtest.org: great resource to view a list of colleges and universities that do not require a SAT or ACT exam for admission University of California: ●Require SAT reasoning or ACT (w/ writing) ●2 Subject exams in 2 different areas* California State Universities: ●Require SAT or ACT * Check specific program testing requirements- as some majors require certain subject tests

SAT I Reasoning Information • The exam covers three subject areas: • Critical reading • Math (Up to Algebra II) • Writing • Students should be prepared for these exams by the Spring of their junior year • To register visit www.collegeboard.com • Upcoming test dates: March 1st, May 3rd, June 7th • All official SAT scores will be recorded on your SAT score report and submitted to the colleges you request All official SAT scores will be recorded on your SAT score report and submitted to the colleges you request

SAT II Subject Tests • This is a supplemental exam that is required by UC schools and some private and out of state schools. • Most of these schools require 2 if not 3 exams in different subject areas. • College board also creates the AP exam so if you are in an AP class you should also sign up to take the subject test in that course. • Check individual college websites to confirm test requirements.

ACT Testing Information • The exam covers five subject areas: • English Grammar • Math (Up to trigonometry) • Reading Comprehension • Science Reasoning • Writing (Optional) • Students should be prepared for these exams by the Spring of their junior year • To register visit www.act.org • Upcoming test dates: February 9th, April 12th, June 14th

  27. College Athletes NCAA Clearinghouse: ●Ensure you are meeting the NCAA course requirements ●Don’t forget to register online @ www.ncaaclearinghouse.net once you have completed Junior year. ●Make sure to send official transcript to NCAA, see registrar

  28. Financial Aid / Scholarships • All students should apply beginning January 2009 • Visit www.fafsa.gov to download FAFSA form • More scholarship information on www.tphs.net CSS/ Profile: - Similar to FAFSA - Certain private Universities use this form to determine financial aid eligibility

  29. TPHS College & Career Center (CCC) The new and improved CCC is now open and located in Room 401!!! Center Hours: Tuesday 7:30am-3:30pm Wednesday 7:30am-3:30pm Thursday 7:30am-3:30pm * Be sure to visit with our center advisor, Loveena Bhagwat for information regarding college and career

  30. Naviance! • Computer program to help prepare for and research college options • http://connection.naviance.com/tphs • Use your TPHS ID number to register • Great to use to start your “resume” and college searches • Ask your counselor or stop by the CCC if you have questions

College/Career Exploration We encourage students to explore career and college options through a variety of ways. • Use the Choices program to research colleges and careers • Access program by visiting www.bridges.com • To receive a password, email Mr. Dean at Brennan.Dean@sduhsd.net (type “password” in the subject line) • Visit the College and Career Center for more information • PLAN Results also indicate career suggestions

  32. Upcoming Events… March 12, 2008 College Night- Learn about admission practices, writing the college essay, SAT’s, athletics and much more. May 15, 2008 Career Day- New format, industry professionals will be visiting classrooms, and will also be available at lunch for individual conversations.

  33. The last day to drop a class… … without any record on your transcript is Thursday, February 28th, 2008 The last day to Withdraw from a class is Friday, April 2nd, 2008 (a W will appear on your transcript)
