  2. Purpose of PIREP Collection Project • Supplemental Data Set for use in Verification Studies • Especially icing and turbulence • Evaluate the Quality and Benefits of TAMDAR Observations compared to PIREPs • E.g., Spatial and Temporal Resolution • PIREP Comparisons to TAMDAR

  3. Highlights • 2322 PIREPs Collected (Through April 5th) • Flight Modes • Climb = 773 • Cruise = 865 • Descent = 684 • 32 Moderate or Greater Turbulence Cases • 25 Moderate or Greater Icing Cases

  4. Highlights (cont) • Information on precipitation, cloud top altitude, and whether the aircraft was in cloud is also available • Many very useful remarks from the pilots are also included • Data available in tab deliminited ASCII flies. • No QC on the data (yet)

  11. Conclusion • Very happy with the response from Mesaba Airlines • Very useful supplemental data set being formed • Working with FSL (B. Moninger and R. Collander) to match PIREPs with TAMDAR • Quality control work starting in the next couple of weeks • Later work: Comparisons of PIREP and TAMDAR observations
