  4. What can the coach do? • Investigate alternatives • Where – Work areas, other venues etc. • When – Time of day • How and what – Method and activity • Plan • Inform players of situation • Anything else? e.g. • attend updating workshops • talk to other coaches • Monitor

  5. Alternatives - Where • Where* – Work areas, other venues etc. • Rotate areas at training (Move activities within each session to reduce wear and tear on surface) • Beach work • Recreation hall • Gymnasium • Swimming pool * Check insurance cover for any alternate training venue or method

  6. Alternatives - When • Change training times to alleviate heavy use of ground around lights* • Early mornings • Lunch times • Afternoons * Check insurance cover for any alternate training time, venue or method

Alternatives - How and what * • Method and activity – use “Game sense” approach and utilise other sports to reinforce principles of play • Cross training – use another sport for fitness or tactical training e.g. cycling, swimming, aquatic fitness programs etc. • Indoor competitions e.g. Volleyball, Indoor soccer, Netball, Basketball (For further information on “Game sense” approach please contact Sport Ed) * Check insurance cover for any alternate training time, venue or method

Planning & Communication • Plan • Any change to activities, methods and/or times • Research options (Discuss with other coaches/administrators) • Communicate and discuss all options with club committee • Inform players of situation • Communicate regularly with players to ensure they are clear on reasons for changes and promote the benefits of the situation

What can the administrator do? • Ensure others are aware of situation • Why there needs to be change in operation • Support & encourage alternative activities • Additional funds, check insurance cover • Ensure players are aware of situation • Communicate with all relevant people; players, parents etc. • Consider options for competition structure and delivery • Consider shorter competition time • Consider reducing the number of participants • Anything else? e.g. • Organise coaching workshops to update your coaches • Find out what others are doing to alleviate the situation
