  5. Design of the RCO • Description • The Rifle Combat Optic (RCO) is an Advanced Combat Optical Gun sight (ACOG) designed for the M16A4, and M4 • Quick target acquisition at close range • Enhanced target ID and hit probability out to 800m

RCO Safety, Warning and Cautions • RCO Safety: Improper handling can lead to a hazard & make the RCO unserviceable • The RCO contains radioactive material for night illumination; Hydrogen-3, known as Tritium • Odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that is normally not harmful. • HTO, which is formed by the burning of Tritium is 10,000 times more hazardous • Breached RCO – Double plastic bag, contact your Radiological Safety Officer or Armorer

  15. RCO Safety, Warning and Cautions • Before mounting place weapon in condition 4 • Do not over-tighten or force any screws. Hand tighten then ¼ turn • Do not over tighten windage and elevation adjusters • Waterproof only with O-rings installed • Clean with water only • Never attempt to disassemble the scope!

Care and Maintenance of the RCO • Use clean or soapy water to rinse foreign material from the external surfaces only. • Dry with dry, clean, soft cloth. • When cleaning lenses ensure no dirt is on cloth • Ensure Adjustor Caps are in place • Do not use any type of solvent or harsh chemicals • Use Lenspen

  17. Care and Maintenance of the RCO • Serviceability check • Conduct a visual inspection for damage of: • Housing and exterior of lenses for cracks • Light collector tube for signs of damage. Bubbles or milky lines in tube are normal • Ensure the Adjuster Caps are fully seated • Ensure TA51 mount has all parts • Inspect ARD for visible damage

  18. Care and Maintenance of the RCO • Serviceability check • Inspection of the tritium lamp should be conducted • Prior to each deployment • Every 6 months from date of last inspection • Immediately following an incident where you suspect the tritium lamp may have been damaged.

  19. Care and Maintenance of the RCO • Serviceability check • Inspection Technique #1: Enter a dark room and allow 10 minutes for eyes to adapt. Observe illuminated chevron • Inspection Technique #2: Completely cover objective lens and fiber optic tube. Place eye close to eyepiece to observe illuminated chevron • If chevron is not illuminated turn in RCO

Care and Maintenance of the RCO • Maintenance • There is no user maintenance for the RCO other than keeping it clean • The RCO will never be disassembled, except by the manufacturer • Field maintenance is the replacement of the Adjustment Cap Retention System by a qualified armorer or optical repairman

  22. Mounting Procedures • If the TA51 mount has been loosened or removed, ensure Loctite or another approved adhesive is used when re-attaching it. Ensure TA51 Rail Mounting Screws Are re-secured w/Loctite if removed

  23. Mounting Procedures • Prior to attempting to mount the optic, loosen the thumb screws and pull the interface clamp bar back against the knobs. • Ensure thumb screws are mounted on right side of weapon

  24. Mounting Procedures • Align the interface stubs located on the bottom of the adapter with the grooves on the rail of the flattop receiver.

  25. Mounting Procedures • With the RCO on the rail and assisted by another Marine • Move the RCO forward and back until proper eye relief is achieved • Finish mounting procedures Eye Relief 1.5 Inches

  26. Mounting Procedures • Apply forward pressure on the optic and • tighten the knobs using finger pressure only. • Add another ¼ turn utilizing a coin or bladed • screwdriver. Caution: DO NOT tighten beyond this recommended method.

  27. Mounting Procedures • Mark the Thumb Screw location with permanent marker or other means. • Installing the AN / PVQ-31 in the same position on the flattop rail and using the same torque on the thumb screws will ensure maximum zero retention
