  1. Status of NMMB-TC 2014-07-24

  2. Summary of NMMB-TC tasks

  3. HWRF physics to NMMB Following physics schemes well tuned in HWRF have been added to NMMB: GFSPBL scheme GFDL surface layer plus GFDL land surface scheme SAS scheme MESO-SAS scheme Add empirical z0 for hurricane to MYJ surface scheme NMMB has “fer”, “fer_high” mico-physics options, and “gfdl”, “rrtmg” for radiation; those are very similar to HWRF’s.

  4. Use HWRF PHYS through changing options in Namelist turbulence: gfspblhur convection: sashur sfc_layer: gfdl land_surface: gfdlslab Tunable variables can be changed in namelist, default values = currently-used in HWRF RUN_TC=.true. ! true='run hurricane' sas_pgcon sas_shal_pgcon shallow_conv sas_shalconv sas_mass_flux sas_mommix var_ric coef_ric_l coef_ric_s ALPHA SFENTH DISHEAT

  5. Flow chart for tests Will be replaced by NMMB-DA/INIT Can be replaced by spectral data GFS 0.5-degree data Boundary Conditions Operational HWRF vortex Initial conditions namelist.nps NPS configure_file_d?? NMMB Post/Tracker Graphics

  6. NMMB-TC Test runs 27-9-3 domains, 43-level, feedback=0.5 Configuration 01 “Hwrfphys” turbulence: gfshur sfc_layer: gfdl land_surface: gfdlslab convection: sashur microphysics: fer shortwave: gfdl longwave: gfdl Configuration 02 “myj/noah-lsm” turbulence: gfs sfc_layer: myj land_surface: noah convection: sashur microphysics: fer shortwave: gfdl longwave: gfdl

  7. Good case NMMB (red) Intensity very close to HWRF (purple), and even better timing of max Good move, follow the storm

  8. HWRF NMMB Bad case NMMB nests do not move

  9. Comparison of myj/noah-LSM and GFDL/slab from NMMB runs.

  10. Future work -nest motion needs improvement -need more tests to evaluate performance of various configurations, find bugs, numerical stability, …. - need full components (e.g., DA + init + nest motion) to test and evaluate results …. - test using spectral gfs data,….
