  3. The Status of Women in the 1st Century • Hebrew • Greek • Roman • Cannon Law • Muslim

  4. Hebrew Sedur (prayer book) • "Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a Gentile.""Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a slave."Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a woman." Hebrew

  5. Hebrews avoided Women as objects of shame Hebrew • Bruised and Bleeding Pharisees - avoided even looking at a woman - closed their eyes and ran into things • Never spoke privately-personally to a womanwho was not closely related. Not even through another • Would not even speak to their own Wives in public

  6. Pandora – Greek Mythology • The First Woman • Prometheus stole Fire from the Greek gods was punished by: • Being bound to rock where an Eagle would eat his liver every day, only to have it grow back and be eaten again • Given Pandora, the first Woman designed to bring torment to Mankind • Pandora opened the Jar that introduced every kind of Evil on the World • “From her is the race of women and female kind:of her is the deadly race and tribe of women wholive amongst mortal men to their great trouble,no helpmates in hateful poverty, but only in wealth.” • Hesiod's poem “Theogony”ca. 8th–7th centuries BC Greek

  7. Plato (427 - 347 BC) • “It is only males who are created directly by the gods and are given souls. Those who live rightly return to the stars, but those who are ‘cowards’ or [lead unrighteous lives] may with reason be supposed to have changed into the nature of women in the second generation.” John Wijngaards @ http://www.womenpriests.org/traditio/inferior.asp

  8. Aristotle (384 - 322 BC) • Women were ‘infertile males’. “The female, since she is deficient in natural heat, is unable to ‘cook’ her menstrual fluid to the point of refinement, at which it would become semen (i.e. ‘seed’). Therefore her only contribution to the embryo is its matter, and a ‘field’ in which it can grow”. Her inability to produce semen is her deficiency. • The reason why the man dominates in society is his superior intelligence. Only the man is a full human being. “The relationship between the male and the female is by nature such that the male is higher, the female lower, that the male rules and the female is ruled.” John Wijngaards @ http://www.womenpriests.org/traditio/inferior.asp

  9. Note regarding Aristotle • He said things and behaved toward his own wife in ways much more favorable than Wijngaards’ observations suggest. • Summarized: • Women were inferior in the Athletic and Political sense. • He recognized general differences in Compassion, Guile, Simplicity, Impulsiveness, Nurturing , Respect, Leadership, and other Characteristics

  10. Roman Law • The wife was the property of her husband and completely subjected to his disposition. • He could punish her in any way he liked. • As far as family property is concerned the wife herself did not own anything. Everything she or her children inherited belonged to her husband, including also the dowry which she brought with her to her marriage. Roman John Wijngaards @ http://www.womenpriests.org/traditio/inferior.asp

  11. AugustineQuestions on the Heptateuch, Book I, § 153 Canon Law • “It is the natural order among people that women serve their husbands and children their parents, because the justice of this lies in (the principle that) the lesser serves the greater . . . This is the natural justice that the weaker brain serve the stronger. This therefore is the evident justice in the relationships between slaves and their masters, that they who excel in reason, excel in power.” John Wijngaards @ http://www.womenpriests.org/traditio/inferior.asp

  12. Mohamed Muslim • Issues that prompted him to create Islam • Polytheism – worship of gods other than the God of AbrahamRejected Catholicism due to Mariolatry • Irreverent behavior • Treatment of Women as Sex Objects • Both Men using Women and Women using Men

  13. Quran Muslim • Sura (An-Nisa’) 4:34 34. Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in the husband's absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband's property, etc.). As to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great.

  14. Contrast Christian treatment of Women

  15. Jesus’ Parables included Women • Luke 13:18-21 Man and the mustard seed, Women used leaven in meal. • Luke 15:3-7 Man found lost sheep. 16. Jesus taught Women • The Lord taught women, even though Jewish Rabbis said that a man should salute no woman, not even his own wife, in a public place. John 4:6-30, 39-42 is the account of theSamaritan woman at the well of Sychar. In this we find Jesus doing contrary to the custom of the day in the following: (1) He taught a woman in public; (2) He, a Jew, was speaking to a Samaritan; (3) He was dealing with a harlot; (4) He did not reject her testifying of Him to others. Original notes by Florence Word - written about 1957.

  17. Jesus had personal contact with Women • Matthew 20:20-22.The wife of Zebedee, the mother of James and John. Matthew 27:55-56 She was ambitiously indiscreet, asking favors for her sons. • Jesus rebuked her • Yet she ministered to Jesus to the end. Original notes by Florence Word - written about 1957.

  18. Jesus benefited certain Women • Matthew 9:20-22 Woman with issue of blood healed. • Luke's 13:10-16 Bent woman - Angers Jews on the Sabbath. • Matthew 15:21-28 Syrophoenician Woman - healed daughter. • John 8:4-11 Adulterous woman - opposes the Jews • Luke 7:37-50 Sinful woman - respects her humility and condemns the Pharisees' pride and lack of hospitality. • Luke 7:12-15 The widow's son at Nain raised from death. • John 11 Mary and Martha's brother Lazarus raised from death. • Galatians 3:28; Mark 16:15 Share in salvation Original notes by Florence Word - written about 1957.

  19. Jesus accepted personal service from Women • Mark 12:41-44 Christ praised the small gift of a widow. • Mark 14:3-9 Woman anoints Jesus' head in Simon's house. Christ rebukes those who criticized her and honors her with the telling of the act till the end of time. • Luke 8:2-3 Women gave of their substance: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, Mary the Mother of James, Salome. • Luke 10:38-42. He accepted the hospitality offered by Mary and Martha. • Luke 23:49,55 Women followed Christ from Galilee to Jerusalem to the cross. • Luke 24:1,9-10; Mark 16:1; John 20:11-18 Women came to embalm the body of Christ. Original notes by Florence Word - written about 1957.

  20. Lazarus’ Sisters • Martha: Luke 10:38 - Hospitable, and energetic.Luke 10:40 - Overly anxious, burdened with care.John 12:2 - Serves the Lord a second time.Jn. 11:21-22, 27 - Great faith.Jn. 11:24 - Knowledge of the scripture.Jn. 11:28 - Has concern for her sister. • Mary: Luke 10:39-42 - Receptive to Christ's teaching.John 11:20 - Quiet resignation. Original notes by Florence Word - written about 1957.

  21. Four Women at Jesus’ feet • Luke 10:39 – Mary, for instruction • Mark 14:8-9 - Sinful Woman, to serve him • John 11:32 – Mary, for Comfort • John 12:3 - Mary Magdaline, To Anoint him Original notes by Florence Word - written about 1957.

  22. Man & Woman depend on each other • 1 Corinthians 11:3, 11-12 (NASB) 3But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ… • …11However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God.

  23. Husbands & Wives belong to each other • 1 Corinthians 7:3-5(NASB) 3The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

  24. Lords, treat her like a Lady ! • 1 Peter 3:5-7(NASB)5For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. 7You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

  25. Hebrew contrast to Christian • Hebrew Daily Seder Prayer • "Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a Gentilefor not having made me a slavefor not having made me a woman.” • Galatians 3:28(NASB) • 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  26. Timothy & Titus

  27. True Beauty • 1 Timothy 2:9-10(NASB) 9Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, 10but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.

  28. Peter expounds Pauls message • 1 Peter 3:1-7(NASB) 1In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, 2as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. 3Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; 4but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

  29. Not assembly leaders • 1 Timothy 2:11-12(NASB) 11A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. • 1 Corinthians 14:34-36(NASB) 34The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. 35If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church. 36Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only?

  30. Recognize differences • 1 Timothy 2:13-15(NASB) 13For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

  31. Necessary Partner • 1 Timothy 3:2(NASB) 2An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, • 1 Timothy 3:12(NASB) 12Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.

  32. Dignified Partner • 1 Timothy 3:11(NASB) 11Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things.

  33. Not Busybodies • 1 Timothy 5:13(NASB) 13At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention.

  34. Ladies – sharing their means • 1 Timothy 5:16(NASB) 16If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed.

  35. Teachers & examples in their families • 2 Timothy 1:5(NASB) 5For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.

  36. Teaching Women to be Women of God • Titus 2:3-5(NASB) 3Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

  37. Why Women should respect the Leadership of Men • Some Women may have more capacity for Spiritual Leadership than some Men • But … Women who don’t are more likely to presume that they do than those who really do • The Leadership of a Godly Woman is setting an example for those who don’t

  38. Why Women should respect the Leadership of Men • God designed Men to be leaders of their Families and of the Church • When Women presume that Leadership role: • Men stop being Leaders • Why?

  39. Why Women should respect the Leadership of Men • Young Women need someone to teach them • -for the hard things – that person needs to be a Mature Woman (not a Man) • Young Men need someone to teach them • -for the hard things – that person needs to be a Mature Man (not a Woman) • Neither Women or Men can be filling the Role God made for them – if they are trying to fill the Role of the other.

  40. Why Women should respect the Leadership of Men • Young Married Couples need someone to teach them • -for the hard things – that “person” needs to be a Mature Married Couple • The Woman can relate to the Woman • The Man can relate to the Man • God prepared for this when he assigned Elders and Deacons be the Husband of one well qualified Wife.

  41. God’s plan – Respect your Husband • Ephesians 5:22-25(NASB)22Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, …

  42. God’s plan – Love your Wife ! • Ephesians 5:28-30(NASB)28So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30because we are members of His body.

  43. God’s plan – provides something Wonderful for us • Ephesians 5:31-33(NASB) • 31For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. • 33Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

  44. Why Women should respect the Leadership of Men • God said so ! • He designed something wonderful for you – if you obey him • You can’t enjoy the wonderful gift of God if you are fighting to see who’s in control

  45. The Role of Women in the Church 1 Peter 3:4 (NASB)… be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.
