About ICM: • an interdisciplinary research unit of Warsaw University created in 1993 • research in modelling of biomolecular, biomedical, solid state, atmospheric and decision systems • host for information infrastructure (supercomputers, servers and software) offered countrywide • Virtual Library of Sciences

  3. Virtual Library of Science: • a countrywide repository of knowledge resources • includes leading international scientific databases and electronic journal collections, as well as Polish content • most resources installed „on-site”, on the local servers hosted by ICM • access for the consortia of academic institutions sharing costs of the licenses • financial support from the Ministry of Scientific Research and Information Technology

International content: • Abstract databases: Math, Inspec, Medline, Science Citation Index, Scopus (on-line) • Chemical databases: Beilstein, Gmelin, PDB • Full text journal collections: OBC archives, Elsevier (1500+), Springer(400+), Kluwer(600+), EMIS, ACS • to be added in 2006: APS, AIP, Emerald, IEEE (on-line & local archive)

  5. Licenses for electronic journals: • access to complete publishers’ collection back to 1995 (Elsevier, Springer, Kluwer) or back to 1st volume • perpetual archive rights to full collections (Springer, Kluwer) or to subscribed journals (Elsevier, ACS etc) • current content offered on-line only (ACS etc) will be stored at ICM upon reaching archival status after each subscription period • e-only pricing (ca 110% of former print) and DDP option for print

  6. Elsevier: 70 members (59 universities, 10 R&D institutes, PAS); over 50’000 full texts downloaded weekly • Springer & Kluwer: 50 members (inc. PAS) • SCI-Ex, Inspec: 22 members (inc. PAS) Consortia (selected numbers):

  7. XX-century archive of the Polish School of Mathematics (journals and book series currently published by the Institute of Mathematics PAS) • several Polish biomedical journals indexed inSCI • abstract databases PSJC (PAS), BAZTECH (ATR) Polish content

  8. Hardware: • duplicated server: Sunfire 880 (12GB) + Sunfire 440 (8GB) • duplicated storage: 2 x 5 TB of used volume • additional Sunfire 440 (16GB) server for developingPolish platform

  9. Software: • CrossFire • OvidNET • Silverlink WebSPRIS • Web of Science • Science Server • Polish platform (under development)

Polish platform: • unified archive, index and search engine, and user interface for Polish and international content, including full text journals, e-books, and abstract databases • standard browse, search, linking, alerting features enhanced with similarity analysis and multilateral exploration of the past usage • open source technology

Technology for the Polish platform: • application platform: J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) • utilised frameworks and tools: Spring, Hibernate • relational database system (metadata management): PostgreSQL • Indexing and search engine: Lucene • User interface: JSP/JSF/Struts Tiles • ... there is also support for a few other popular acronyms and buzzwords ...

  12. Metadata and linking standards • The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH protocol) • BWMETA – a flexible metadata standard comprising the Dublin Core standard • supports OpenURL standard for resource localization • Linking to external resources through CrossRef service
