  3. Setting the Scene • Part of a national initiative - From Care2Work – see www.leavingcare.org • Focus on providing opportunities to build employability • New guidance from the DfE – more work experience during preparation for transition to independence

  4. Why a focus on care leavers? • 21% of care leavers were 16 on leaving home yet 24 is the average for all • 15% of looked after children achieve 5 good GCSE’s v 70% of children nationwide • At the age of 19, 37.9% of care leavers are not in education, training or employment • Just 7% of care leavers go to higher education v 43% is the national average

Benefits for Employer • Con tributes to supporting particularly vulnerable group in local community • An opportunity to develop staff via mentoring and supervision • Can reduce recruitment costs • National recognition via From Care2Work Quality Mark – we can support you to a • Ongoing local publicity for employers engaging with our community network

Benefits to Young People • Experience of the world of work • Gathering a picture of what employers require from apprentices and staff in general • Greater understanding of the value of studying for their qualifications • Confirmation of career aspirations – or not! • Increased motivation • Increased confidence and self esteem
