  7. Today’s Purpose • Identify and apply components of effective professional development to building PD and classroom instruction • Reflect on (orally and in writing) on how to implement effective components of professional development

  8. Stand Up, Sit Down • Everyone stand up! • Sit down if you are: • A district or building administrator • Counselor • Instructional coach/PD specialist/teacher trainer • ESL teacher • Mainstream teacher • Other- Who did we miss? • Stand up if you are here with a building TEAM!

  9. ELL Simulation Think of a really delicious meal you had recently. What was it? Where were you? What did it smell like? Taste like? Visualize the meal. Now turn to a partner and describe your meal using as many sensory details as possible. BUT WAIT!!! As you describe the meal, you may not use any words with the letter “n”!

  10. Simulation cont… We would like you to take a moment and write a paragraph about the symbolism and significance of this image. Use academic vocabulary, but…. YOU MAY NOT USE WORDS WITH THE LETTER “N”!

  12. Action Plan Form Time to reflect and plan! With your building team (or individually) think of how you can apply the ELL simulation to PD and classroom instruction. Describe the activity. How will you follow-up on it? Who will be responsible?

  13. Human Word Sort • Pick one vocabulary card. • Sort yourselves into groups. • In your group, discuss why your vocabulary words belong together and come up with a group name. • Share out.

  17. Vocab On Your Back • Everyone will get a vocabulary word or term taped to their back. You will not know your word! • Find a partner and look at their word. Give your partner clues, ACADEMIC clues, to help them guess their word. • If you get your partner to guess their word, YOU get to keep their card. It is your point. • The person with the most points wins!
