  3. Pitched vs. Non-Pitched • Pitched percussion are any kind of instrument you can play a melody on. A pitched percussion instrument plays different notes • Non-pitched percussion can only play different rhythms. You can’t play a melody on these instruments • Both are important to the orchestra because they either solidify the melody or add interest • All percussion instruments make sounds are made from hitting, striking, rubbing, or shaking. As long as vibration is created it will make sound

  6. Pitched: Piano • One of the most important pitched percussion • Was invented in the early 1700’s but wasn’t popular until 1800’s • Can produces the lowest and the highest pitches • Sound is produced by vibrating strings, strings are hit by tiny “hammers” inside the piano
