  1. Important Information • Please meet me in the C-36 computer lab tomorrow with all the materials you need to work on your senior portfolio. • You should be listing all the awards, activities (clubs, groups, organizations, volunteering), and paying jobs that you’ve done since your freshman year and listing them on a piece of paper so you can use them for next Tuesday and Wednesday in the computer lab. • The rough draft of your senior statement is due to me by next Friday typed.

  2. Homework • Due tomorrow is the paragraph that we started on Friday. We will complete it today. • In your ERWC books please read the following 4 articles by Thursday (pages 8-18): • “10 Rules for Going to College When Nobody Really Expected You To” • “Not Going to College is a Viable Option” • “Why Go to College?” • “The 10 Most Common Excuses for Not Going to College and Why They’re All Wrong”

  3. Take a Stand • You will now write a paragraph supporting one side of the argument: A street smart person can be successful in school OR a street smart person will struggle in school. 1) Topic sentence: State your side of the argument clearly + because (1 major reason). • You will now prove that your reason is true through facts (sentences) from the article. 2) Write an exact quote from the article that supports your topic sentence. • Make sure you put “….” (Graff, pg #)

  4. 3) Summarize information around the quote in 1-2 sentences. This provides factual context to the quote. 4) Explain how the quote proves your topic sentence. • You’re basically showing how the quote shows/proves that what you wrote in the “because” part of your topic sentence is true. 5) Write an exact quote from the article that supports your topic sentence. • Make sure you put “….” (Graff, pg #) 6) Summarize information around the quote in 1-2 sentences. This provides factual context to the quote. 7) Explain how the quote proves your topic sentence.

  5. 8) Write an exact quote from the article that supports your topic sentence. • Make sure you put “….” (Graff, pg #) 9) Summarize information around the quote in 1-2 sentences. This provides factual context to the quote. 10) Explain how the quote proves your topic sentence. 11) 1 sentence summary of the main point of the whole paragraph. Congratulations: You just learned how to write a complete paragraph using a fact to support your side of an argument rather than opinions. When I ask for a paragraph in an essay this is what I’m looking for. Master this and your writing will improve dramatically.
