  1. Welcome to PTA Curriculum Night! Berryman, Carey,Dorton, Kennedy Team

  2. Our curriculum:AcademicKnowledgeandSkills The AKS are what we teach

  3. Purpose of AKS The Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) were developed by our teachers, with input from our parents and community, in response to Gwinnett County Public Schools’ mission statement.

  4. Curriculum Focus for 7th Grade Language Arts Read for Meaning • Students will read in a variety of genres– balancing informational and literary texts. • Students will read texts that are worthy and complex enough to warrant repeated reading and detailed investigation. In other words, they’ll analyze what they read. • Students will use active reading strategies to recognize important points or evidence as they read. • Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of a text by given meaningful post-reading activities that require students to use information from the text.

  5. Curriculum Focus for 7th Grade Language Arts Write to Demonstrate Understanding • Students will write in a variety of styles -- mostly informational and argumentative. • Students will take their writing beyond the basics of main idea and supporting detail – learning to incorporate specific and meaningful points of elaboration to enrich the details they’ve included. • Students will be able to cite several sources of specific relevant evidence in order to support their point of view about texts and topics.

  6. Highlighting to Learn • We use anchor papers to show students good examples of writing. • The more students write, the better they will become!  • Blue = Major Ideas • Pink = Major Details • Green = Specific Details

  7. Example of Depth of Development in a Paragraph There are many great options for getting to school, but all have their downsides. Controlling Idea: Sample Body Paragraph Although they have some drawbacks, cars are a preferred method of transportation. Cars are private, and you probably won’t be bothered. You don’t have to worry about some intense coffee drinker breathing down your neck or a person you despise sitting next to you. You can also travel in the comfort of your own seat with the A/C set at your ideal temperature.Unfortunately, cars are very expensive and with gas prices at $3 a gallon, it quickly becomes unaffordable.Car riding can also be inconvenient to your parents or whomever you ride with. Some parents must be at work at the time school starts and ends and they just can’t drive you there and back? Supporting Idea Major Details Specific Details and Examples
