  1. Daily Work Organizer Homework: Reading Log 14: pg 122-124 Test Corrections & Survey Finish worksheets

  2. Jobs • PowerPoint Master • 2 Fantastic Student to handback Homework • Whiteboard eraser!

  3. Waves

  4. Why do we care? Waves are all around us all the time, even if we can’t see them. Waves not only explain surfing, but they also explain earthquakes, sound, and one of the most mysterious phenomena on Earth-light

  5. What do Waves Do? Move energy through matter or space

  6. Two Types of Waves Mechanical Waves need matter (medium) to travel through Electromagnetic Waves can travel through empty space

  7. Mechanical Waves Mechanical waves travel through mediums such as: water air solids

  8. Mechanical Waves • May be longitudinal • Or transverse

  9. Types of Mechanical Waves Transverse Waves – energy moves up and down or side to side while traveling forward Wavelength Amplitude Crest Trough How often = Frequency

  10. Types of Mechanical Waves Longitudinal/Compression Waves – energy moves along the medium while traveling forward Wavelength How often = Frequency

  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbuhdo0AZDU Types of Waves:

  12. Mechanical Waves Transverse Longitudinal • Has wavelength, frequency, and amplitude • Energy travels forward but moves up and down/side to side • Has wavelength and frequency • Energy travels forward in pulses

  13. Put the following waves under the correct category: • A wave at a ball game • Guitar string • Slinky • Flag waving in the wind • Sound wave • Shaking a rope • Water wave

  14. II. Mechanical Waves Longitudinal Transverse • Slinky • Sound wave • Water wave • A wave at a ball game • Guitar string • Flag waving in the wind • Shaking a rope • Water wave

  15. Electromagnetic Waves – Light!

  16. Example 1 3 m 2 2 m 3 m v = f λ v =1.5 m/s

  17. GUESS FORMULA: G = Givens - write them all down with symbols, numbers and units U = Unknown - write down the unknown with a question mark E = Equation - write down the equation or equations that apply in the problem solve the equation(s) for the desired unknown S = Substitute - substitute the given information into the solved equation S = Solve - solve numerically, paying attention to units identify the final answer by circling, boxing, or underlining it clearly check the final answer to be sure it makes sense
