  1. General Election 2010 What the Parties Say – Crime

The Conservative Party – Crime • People should vote for the person who runs the police in their area. • Police should have more power to stop and search people to stop knife crime. • People should be told who breaks the law in their area to make them ashamed. • People who do things to stop a crime or catch a criminal should not be arrested or taken to court. • Police should be able to fine people or give them punishments straight away if they do anything which is ‘anti-social’. • Police should not have to fill in too many forms is they stop and search people. • Increase the number of places in prison and stop people from being let out of prison early. • Allow courts say the minimum and maximum amount of time someone spends in prison.

The Labour Party – Crime • Since Labour has come to power, crime has decreased by 40%. • There are 15,000 more police since Labour won their first election. • Parents of badly behaved children between 10 and 15 should be interviewed and actions taken against them if it is the parent’s fault. • If a child gets an ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order) their parents’ should have a ‘Parenting Order’, telling them what they MUST do to be a proper parent. • People who use a knife in a crime should get a longer prison sentence. • Police should carry weapons scanners. • Money spent on the police will not be cut at all at least until 2013. • Police should have less forms to fill in. • People should NOT vote for who is in charge of the police in their area. • Add 15,000 more prison places by 2014.

The Liberal Democrats – Crime • Increase the number of police by 3,000 in 5 years. • Get rid of the idea of identity cards. • Elect the people in charge of the police and give them more power. • Make police have fitness tests every year. • Use computers to stop police have to fill in so many forms. • Create a National Crime Reduction Agency so different police forces share good ideas. • Improve police officers’ jobs. • Make forms that the police fill in easier.

The Green Party – Crime • Make criminals talk to their victims so that they realise what they have done to them. • Stop private companies being used to run prisons. • Allow less people to keep guns. • If prisoners show that they are sorry for what they have done and are behaving well they should be released early. • Help poorer people so that they do not have to turn to crime to live. • Make some drugs legal.

  6. UKIP – Crime • Allow people to vote on what they think the police should be spending more time on. • Put more police on the street. • Get rid of the Human Rights Act. • Make criminals serve the whole sentence that they are given by a court.
