  1. General Election 2010 United Kingdom Independence Party

  2. United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) Symbol Leader Lord Malcolm Pearson of Rannoch Born 20th July 1942 (67) Member of the House of Lords Leader of UKIP since 2009

  3. United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) – Fact-file • Also known as UKIP. • Beliefs: • The most important issue facing Britain today is Europe. Britain should leave the European Union straight away. • People in the UK need to work together more. • The Government should not tax rich people more than poor people. People should not rely on the Government to help them with money when they need it – they should take care of themselves as much as possible. • England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales should stay together as one country, but there is no need for each country to have its own Parliament. • Being proud to be British is an important issue. Britishness should be celebrated and other cultures are not as important. Money should not be spent on helping other cultures be celebrated. • Britain should leave the European Union immediately. Britain should keep the pound. • Britain should have a strong army, navy and air-force and only use it if it is important for Britain and not to help other countries.

  4. UKIP – Most Important Promises • Leave the European Union and just trade with Europe. • Everyone will pay the same percentage of tax and money for health and social security. • Not allow anyone from abroad to come and live in Britain for 5 years. • Set up a grammar school for clever children in every town. • Stop ‘green’ taxes and wind farms. • Create an English Parliament of English MPs at Westminster.

  5. UKIP – Money • Everyone will pay the same percentage in a single income tax / national insurance tax even if they earn a lot of money. • People will not pay tax until they earn £11,500 instead of £6,475. • Get rid of the tax people pay on money left when somebody dies. • Get rid of the tax we pay on things we buy (VAT) and get councils to set a local Sales Tax.

  6. UKIP – Race and Immigration • Stop anyone from abroad coming to live in the UK for 5 years. • Send three-times more people back to their own countries when they have come to the UK without permission to. • People who do not have somewhere to live will not be given a visa to live in the UK. • Nobody who works in a public place (e.g. hospitals, schools or councils) will be allowed to cover their faces. • People will not be allowed to cover their faces in any public building. • Private companies will be allowed to ban people who work for them from covering their faces.

  7. UKIP – Afghanistan and Defence • Spend 40% more on defence to buy better equipment, improve homes of soldiers and their families and improve medical care for the armed forces. • Double the size of the Territorial Army. • Increase the army by 25,000. • Not join in with European defence plans. • Only sent British soldiers to war when it is good for Britain.

  8. UKIP – Crime • Allow people to vote on what they think the police should be spending more time on. • Put more police on the street. • Get rid of the Human Rights Act. • Make criminals serve the whole sentence that they are given by a court.

  9. UKIP – Health • Make people pay an insurance for their health care BUT make sure that you can see a doctor without paying. • Put matrons in charge of wards in hospitals. • People should vote for who runs their local hospitals. • Let doctors work for as many hours as they need to.

  10. UKIP – Education • Give parents vouchers for education so that they can spend them in whatever school they want to. • Set up a grammar school in every town. • Replace student loans (which they pay back) with student grants (which they don’t pay back). • Do not believe that 50% of people need to go to university. • Let schools decide the subjects they teach. • All lessons must be taught in English, except in parts of Wales where they speak Welsh. • Not test children at the age of seven; • Stop children having to do Sex education, Citizenship and Personal, Social and Health education.

  11. UKIP – Family • Put all of the help given in different ways to parents of children together into one weekly payment but only for the first three children people have. • Make sure that couples do not pay too much tax.

  12. UKIP – Environment • Do not believe that man has hurt the environment. • Do not agree with taxes which encourage people to be ‘Green’. • Against the building of wind farms; • Support building new nuclear power stations on existing sites and new clean coal power stations. • Reduce pollution and encourage recycling; • Invest in technology to make cars more efficient and cut fuel emissions.

  13. UKIP – Pensions • Change the way pensions are given and give £130 per week for all people over 65. • Stop people having to pay tax on their pensions. • Make sure that people who work for the Government don’t have to have pensions which are too high.

  14. UKIP – Housing • People who arrive in the UK will not get council houses unless they have a job. • Make sure people who have waited the longest for a council house get one. • Make sure local councils decide how many houses are built in their area. • Get rid of Home Information Packs. • Stop the need to prove that houses save energy.

  15. UKIP – Foreign Affairs and Europe • Withdraw from the EU and only trade with the members. • The UK should not accept any European laws. • Should be a good friend to our allies in NATO BUT not always join in when the USA is involved in a war. • Withdraw British troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. • Make sure that the special friendship with the USA is kept. • Only go to war when Britain is affected by something.

  16. UKIP – Local Government • Give more powers back to local councils. • Let people vote on important local issues. • Ensure local councils raise over half of their money locally, and allow them to spend it how they work. • Let local authorities decide how muxch they charge businesses.

  17. UKIP – Transport • Use money released from leaving the EU to build new bypasses and fund road improvements and widening schemes; introduce a 'Britdisc' for foreign lorries using British roads; return government fuel tax windfalls to motorists if oil prices rise above a set price; invest in three new high-speed rail lines; allow longer rail franchise periods; scrap London Crossrail project; oppose a sixth terminal and third runway at Heathrow, but support the case for a new London Airport in the Thames Estuary; give residents a vote on speed cameras and remove them where they "serve no use".

  18. UKIP – Countryside and Farming • Leave the EU which will allow farmers more freedom to do what they have to do. • Slowly stop farmers getting money from the Government. • All food labels should say where the food comes from and how it was made. • Against genetically modified crops being grown. • Put someone in charge of Supermarkets to make sure they give farmers a fair price for the food they produce. • Allow people in each county to vote to decide if they will let fox-hunting happen again.

  19. UKIP – Human Rights and Freedoms • Get rid of the Human Rights Act. • Against identity cards and the Government keeping people’s records on computer. • Get rid of non-British people from the country who support terrorism. • Put British people who support terrorism into prison. • Allow people’s phones to be bugged and the information used to put them into prison for terrorism. • Only people who have been convicted should have their DNA kept by the police.

  20. UKIP – Making Government Better • Allow voters to decide on important things if 5% or more of the population ask for the right to. • Support a House of Lords made up of 200 elected and 100 appointed members, plus bishops and law-lords. • Get rid of the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies . Replace them with bodies made up of MPs from those nations. • Allow English MPs to meet for one week every month to consider England-only laws. • Give most powers back to the House of Commons. • Keep the way that we vote for MPs the same. • Give parliament more powers.
