  2. Campus Planning for Multicast • The function of campus multicast assumes you have installed and have operational Interdomain Multicast Routing. • Multicast Border Gateway Protocol

  3. Multicast? • Will my institution use multicast? • If Yes, Will we only need to listen • Or, do we plan to source multicast as well. • What mutlicast applications will we use?

  4. Multicast General • What multicast is currently on the network? • Router protocols (HSRP) • Clustered Systems • Imaging Servers and Clients • Are they using the correct addresses?What addresses are being used!?

  5. Multicast listening layer 2 • What are the multicast capabilities of my switches? Layer 2 distribution is an integral part of receiving IP Multicast properly without flooding your network. • IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) Newer switches • CGMP (Cisco Group Management Protocol) Older switches • IGMP Snooping High performance switches • Does your multicast pass through a packet shaper? • Layer 2 Multicast is predicated on a working Layer 3 Multicast framework.

Multicast Listening Layer 3 • PIM Spase modeUses unicast routing protocols to build a sparse data distribution tree for multicast. • Rendezvous PointsHow many and where? • Reverse Path Forward (RPF) • If you have networks with multiple router paths RPF checks may fail. • What does you campus Router (Layer 3) design look like? • Does it need to be on all routers? Which routers? • Does it need to be on all interfaces? Which Interfaces? • Depending on your design enabling multicast my be an all or everything proposition. • Does the Multicast pass through a firewall • Apply filters to block all multicast sources originating inside your network but the ones you permit.

Sourcing Multicast • Yes, my Institution will source multicast? • You should have your own Autonomous System Number (ASN) from ARIN (American Registery for Internet Numbers). http://www.arin.net/registration/templates/asn-request.txt • Use a GLOP calculator to Convert ASN to public multicast address space. http://gigapop.uoregon.edu/glop/ • Modify filters to permit sourcing of only valid multicast. • Public vs Private Multicast addresses
