Day One - July 1, 1863 • Gettysburg Pennsylvania • Happened by accident • Confederate soldiers were looking for shoes • Run into a Union cavalry regiment • Union Solders -90,000 • Confederates – 75,000 • Union Army falls back and take a defensive position • Cemetery Hill and Culp’s Hill just out side of Gettysburg

  3. Day two – July 2, 1863 • Heavy fighting throughout the day • The confederates under General Lee attempt to dislodge the Union from their strong hold on Culp’s hill. • Fighting also occurs in the Peach Orchard and Devils Den.

  5. Day 3 – July 3, 1863 • Union Army entrenches their position • Lee’s Confederate soldiers had attacked the Union left and right flanks the day before • Lee believed the center of the Union army’s line would be weaker due to having to send reinforcements to the flanks the day before.

  6. Day 3 Continued • General Lee's decided to attack the center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge. • This is known as Pickett’s Charge • 15,000 confederate soldiers move across an open field • Led by General Pickett

  7. Union soldiers advanced out into the field and flanked the advancing Confederates • Union soldier were positioned behind a stone wall on Cemetery Ridge. • Confederates received fire from three directions.
