  2. PROGRAM OVERVIEW • Program sponsors • Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation • Major League Baseball • Recognizing Boys & Girls Club members who have a proven talent • Provides up to $2,500 annually for use in support of talent development

  3. TALENT OVERVIEW • What talent areas? • Talent is defined very broadly • For example: • Sports • Performing Arts • Fine Arts • STEM • Leadership • Other (e.g. Auctioneer)

Scholarship Year and Application Dates • For Full Year Scholarship ($2,500) • Timeframe: September 1 – August 31 • New and renewal applications • New Applications due April 1 • Application Form only is due April 1 • Complete documentation due May 1 • Renewal Applications due May 1 • All renewal documentation is due May 1

Scholarship Year and Application Dates – cont’d • Partial Year Scholarship ($1,250) • New applications only • Timeframe: January 1 – August 31 • Application form due November 1 • Complete documentation due December 1 • Applicants are automatically moved into full year consideration in May • New budget and action plan only due May 1

QUALIFICATIONS • Must be a Boys & Girls Club member • Generally 5th grade to sophomore in high school • Age exceptions at the lower end can be made • Must have a “proven talent” • Should have already had some talent development experiences • Talent must be attested to by a competent authority • A coach or teacher in that area • Should be an objective assessment

  7. FIRST-TIME APPLICATIONS • Application process will be handled by Scholarship Management Services (SMS) • Applications available at http://www.bgca.org/Pages/HA_CTD.aspx • Complete New Candidate Application Form • Email application to SMS • Email address on application site

  8. FIRST-TIME APPLICATIONS (cont’d) • First time applications due on April 1 to SMS • BGCA will review application and provide feedback on continuing application process. • On positive feedback, SMS will contact Club to continue application process

FIRST-TIME APPLICATIONS (cont’d) • Additional information needed: • 2 years of report cards/transcripts • 2 letters of recommendation • 1 from a coach/mentor with expertise in the talent area • This letter MUST give an objective assessment of the talent and abilities of the Club member and the potential for the growth of that talent • 1 from a Club staff member • Attests to the character and behavior of the member

FIRST-TIME APPLICATIONS (cont’d) • Additional information needed: • Action Plan • The basic plan that the Club member will use to develop his/her talent. • Be as detailed as possible. • Budget • Should be detailed as to how funds will be used to support talent development • Should be focused on lessons or specialized equipment • MINIMAL travel expenses will be supported • Unique experiences (conferences, summer camps, etc.) will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis

  11. FIRST-TIME APPLICATIONS (cont’d) • A picture of the applicant • Signature form • Must obtain the following signatures • Champion • Person who will take primary responbility for the talent development activities of the member • Nominee’s parent or guardian • Club unit director

RENEWAL APPLICATIONS • Similar process to new applications except: • Renewal Application and complete documentation due date is May 1 • The renewal application serves as the year-end report for the previous year’s scholarship. • Receipts from previous year’s scholarship must be included with renewal application

  13. AFTER APPROVAL • After approval by the Foundation and Major League Baseball • BGCA will send Club a Letter of Agreement • Upon completion of the Letter of Agreement, a check for the amount of the scholarship will be sent to the Club for disbursement to the member and her/his family.
