  8. Teacher Page Home Georgia Standard: S1L1. Students will investigate the characteristics and basic needs of plants and animals. c. Identify the parts of a plant—root, stem, leaf, and flower. Objective: Students will identify the four main parts of a plants and their function. The worksheets for this assignment can be easily created in Microsoft Word to fit the needs of your students. The Plant Parts sheet should show a picture of a plant and have fill in the blank spaces by stem, leaves, roots, and flower for students to label. The Plant Function sheet should have each part written out with several blank lines beside it for students to write in the function of that part. Depending on the age and reading level of your students, some students may need help reading the passages about each plant part. This assignment should be completed after a thorough introduction of plants and plant parts so students can be familiar with the vocabulary. Hint: Encourage students to use the pictures throughout the WebQuest to help them identify the parts of the plant on the labeling worksheet.

  9. Roots Process The roots help give support by anchoring the plant and absorbing water and nutrients needed for growth. They can also store food that the plant uses to carry out other functions. The roots are what carries the water and food needed for plants to grow.

  10. Stem Process Stems carry water and food from the roots to the leaves. Then the food made by the leaves moves to other parts of the plant. Stems also give support for the plant allowing the leaves to reach the sunlight that they need to produce food.

  11. Leaves Process Leaves are the food making place of green plants. Leaves come in many different shapes and sizes. Leaves are made to catch light and have openings to allow water and air to come and go. Leaves are the site of the food making process called photosynthesis.

  12. Flower Process Flowers not only look pretty but, in fact, are important in making seeds. The petals of the flower are also important parts of the flower, because they help attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and bats.
