  1. Specific NIH Concerns Regarding The Risk Assessment of the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories at Boston University Meeting of the NIH Coordinating Committee and Tetra Tech, Inc 5 May 2009

  2. Concern: Clarity of the Report Need to: • Reorganize • Edit & streamline • out-of-scope statements - remove • excess material – remove or move • terminology – make clear and consistent • Add • process diagram • figure & table legends

  3. Concern: Information/Data Need to: • Correct inaccuracies • Building, systems, procedures • Complete information • non-airborne releases, pathogens • items listed as “missing“ • Describe information management • gathering • bibliography – annotated? • data selection • deriving estimates

  4. Concern: Evaluation process - 1 Need to: • Delete “unmitigated” analysis • hazards as breakdowns of existing safeguards • Separate BSL-3 and BSL-4 starting at CSMs • Separate organisms at • source terms • probabilities of infection given source terms • severity of disease given infection

  5. Concern: Evaluation process - 2 Need to: • Consider site of release • in containment • outside containment but inside building • outside of the building • Consider alternatives to combining: • infectivity and severity into single value for consequences • consequences and frequency into a single risk ranking
