  2. Finding the Evidence is an online training course which has been developed to assist NHS staff in locating up-to-date information to inform their evidence-based practice.

  3. Why take part? • The importance of evidence-based practice is well known but finding quality information can be both difficult and time consuming. • This course aims to save you time by teaching you how to search effectively for quality information.

  4. Course Objectives Completion of this course will enable you to: • Contact and use your local NHS library • Set up and use an NHS Athens username and password • Navigate the Leeds libraries website • Search the library catalogue by author, title or subject • Find electronic journals using My Journals • Understand the range of available healthcare databases • Formulate a search strategy using PICO • Perform a keyword search making use of truncation and phrase searching • Understand thesaurus searching and when to explode a search term • Find and make use of critical appraisal checklists

  5. Course Content • Split into four modules this course will guide you through the process of accessing, finding, searching and evaluating information. • Each module can be completed at your own pace and at a time convenient to you.

  6. Module 1 - Access • Your Library • Register and find out the contact details, opening hours, services & facilities of your local NHS library. • The Leeds Libraries website • Take a virtual tour of our website • Register for an NHS Athens account • Set up an NHS Athens username and password

  7. Module 2 - Find • The library catalogue • Learn how to search for material by author, title or subject • Finding electronic journals • Log in and search My Journals • Introduction to healthcare databases • Discover the range of databases available to use.

  8. Module 3 - Search • Formulating a search strategy • Learn how PICO can help you to identify key search terms • Keyword searching • Get some tips on using wildcards and truncation to make your searching more effective • Thesaurus searching • Learn about the structure of the thesaurus tree and why and when to explode search terms

  9. Module 4 - Evaluate • Critical appraisal skills • Find out how the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklists can help you to evaluate all types of studies including randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and qualitative studies
