  4. Let’s Rock and Roll! Who were scholar-officials? Hummmm...

  5. 1. Who were scholar-officials? • Those who had tested well on the civil-service exams; they understood Chinese classics, poetry, legal and administrative issues.

  6. 2. What was the examination for scholar-officials based on? • Mainly the works of Confucius…

  7. 3. Why did Aristocrats continue to hold most offices? • Aristocrats held the most offices because they had the money to attend university and pay for tutors, books and the time to devote to studying.

  9. 1. According to emperors and scholars, knowledge of Confucius would produce what type of government officials? • They would be rational, moral & able to maintain order.

  10. 2. What new group of people was allowed to become government officials during the Song period? • The new group to become government officials during the Song period were people from the lower classes. • The question all of you historians must be asking is …why?.....hummmmmmmmm

  11. Why did people want government jobs? • People wanted these government jobs because they could enjoy privileges like being excused from taxes and military service…. • Is that similar to our culture today????

  12. Confucianism: • A set of beliefs, based on the teachings of Confucius, that focused on proper conduct, respect for elders, scholarship and government service

  13. Buddhism: • A religion based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha; Buddhism stressed that suffering is a basic part of life, that life is a cycle of death and rebirth, and that suffering can be overcome

  14. Daoism: • A belief system based on the teachings of Laozi; Daoists emphasize living in harmony with nature and being content with one’s life
