Downgrading (1) • When some portion on the delivery route is not IMA-compliant, • Bounce mail to sender • Downgrade to be compatible with RFC2821/2822 • SMTP Envelope needs to be downgraded to ASCII • Sender specifies both IMA and ASCII address (ALT-ADDRESS) • Automatic conversion to ASCII Compatible Encoding from IMA(may require another SMTP parameter) • Headers need Conversion of UTF-8 data to ASCII • How to encode depends on each header

  3. Downgrading (2) • Downgrading can occur before sending, after reception or in the middle of transmission (last one is hardest) • Present document is just a sketch • Many known issues that will have to be worked through
