  3. Broken BridgesGetting ready for defense in the War of 1812 with the United States, Craig's soldiers destroyed all the bridges on the Craig Road and blocked off the road in many places.

Great National Pike • In 1811 the government started building the Great National Pike. • Thousand of men worked on the roads, every few years a new part was opened. • Stagecoaches and covered wagons used the roads for carrying mail and passengers. • Western farmers used the roads to move sheep and cattle to the big markets in the east.
