  1. Long-Term Effects of ATV Fords on Invertebrate Community Dynamics Kendra Cole Undergraduate Student Biology and Chemistry Tennessee Technological University Cookeville, TN 38505

  2. Introduction • Aquatic invertebrates play a large role in stream communities. • Declines among invertebrate populations can lead to overall decline throughout the entire stream community.

  3. Summary • Problem: What effect does stream crossing by ATVs have on aquatic invertebrate populations? • Objective: To access the effects of ATV Fords on the surrounding aquatic habitat, particularly on the invertebrate community in the Calf Killer River.

  4. Methods and Materials • Chose 4 sites of study: • Upstream (control) • Seldomly used ATV ford • Frequently used ATV ford • Downstream • Used kick nets to collect invertebrates from each site on two different dates. • Preserved specimens in isopropyl solution. • Identified and counted species in lab. • Analyzed data.

  5. Budget • CATEGORY Agency WWC/TTU • SALARIES & WAGES • Kendra Wallace $3,500.00 • Graduate Students $12,000.00 • Subtotal $3,500.00 $12,000.00 • BENEFITS • 25% of Salaries $875.00 • TRAVEL • 2 trips x 55 mi/trip x $0.75/mi $82.50 • Administrative $1,500.00 • Subtotal $1,582.50 • EXPENDABLES • Supplies $3,968.00 • Telephone and Copies $500.00 • Tuition and Fees $2,992.00 • Subtotal $4,468.00 $2,992.00
