  1. Undergraduate Research Opportunity Resource AI’s: Wyatt Clark & VaibhavGarg Students: Austin Graft, Joshua Veldez, Kelsey Miller

  2. Task: Create a resource that will allow students to learn more about the research opportunities available to them Briefly: • Create descriptions of each sub-discipline • List specific opportunities

  3. Sub-Tasks Familiarize Student Researchers with each field Discover specific/potential opportunities Survey undergraduate interests/abilities/preconceived notions of each field Create Web Page

  4. 1. Familiarize Student Researchers with each field • How can we make a page on undergraduate research if we don’t understand what professors are researching? • Have students briefly informally meet with professors in each discipline • Conduct a Free Form Interview • Let what students discover in these brief interviews guide a more in-depth interview to be conducted later • Avoid Videotaping at this stage in order to maintain a comfortable atmosphere

  5. 1. Familiarize Student Researchers with each field • After “researching” what professors do compare this with what the students pre-conceptions of each field were • Group members were asked to do a write up on what their impression of each field was before they conducted their “research”

  6. 2. Compile List of Opportunities • Survey all professors about • Opportunities (if Professors do not have opportunities ask they what they would have students do if they did) • Required Abilities • programming languages • software • skill level • familiarity with field • Time Required • Can students make own hours • Can they work from home

  7. 3. Undergraduate interests/abilities/preconceived notions of each field • What misconceptions do students have about each sub-discipline • Uncovering these will help tune students expectations about what opportunities they will have • Abilities • Documenting student abilities will help Professors tune their expectations about what students CAN do

  8. Create Web Page • Let what we discover direct design of web page • Avoid setting format of page in stone BEFORE students have familiarized themselves with what information they think will be important!
