  2. A little about yourself • Name • Title • Organization • How long have you been working with computers? • How long have you been troubleshooting computers?

  3. What questions do I ask? • When did it work last? • What changed? • Has anything occurred in the room? • Has anything occurred in the building?

  4. Bad Mouse

  5. Keyboard doesn't respond properly.

  6. Computer is completely dead!

  7. No picture on the monitor

  8. Computer won’t turn on

  9. Surge protector issues

  10. Can’t access a website

  11. PING

  12. No email

  13. Common cabling problems • Bent cables • RJ-45 tongues breaking off • If bad kink or bend in cable, could cause problem (don’t “un-kink”) • Crossover cable thrown in the mix? • Secure cables as close to machine, floor, etc, as possible, so likelihood of cable being kicked out is not as high

  14. CD-ROM/Floppy Drive won’t work

  15. Computer locks up and/or is acting weird?

  16. Computer starts up in "safe mode"

  17. Defragmentation

  18. Scandisk

  19. Error Messages

  20. Computer displays a disk error or non-system disk message?

  21. Printer Problems

  22. Preventive Maintenance • Blow out the cases for dust. Do the same for your printers • Cheap paper has a lot of dust, which collects on the printers • Laser printers have special paper that you run through them to clean the drum

  26. What should you know about your software? • Licensing information • Available upgrades • Service Pack information • Known Bugs

  27. Final Thoughts • After exhausting all of the potential issues that could exist, then go on to “more sophisticated” troubleshooting techniques • Don’t make it harder on yourself than necessary!

  28. Develop Good E-mail Etiquette • Strip out addresses when forwarding. • Never open attachments from people you don’t know • Don’t be a spammer. • Never unsubscribe from a spam list.
