  1. Hydrography by the Military For: Beyond Safety of Navigation: Multibeam and Data Visualization Workshop Approved for Public Release

  2. A New Focus • The focus of military operations has shifted from the conventional, deep ocean and cold-war style environments to the complicated and ever changing littoral areas. This change of focus brings hydrography to a new level of importance. Naval Oceanographic Office Approved for Public Release

  3. NAVOCEANO, NOAA & NGA Conducts military surveys and generate specialized nautical products for the Navy and DoD. Surveys are conducted in international waters, EEZs of other nations and foreign territorial waters via international agreements to meet U.S. Navy and DoD requirements. Conducts ocean surveys within the territorial waters of the U.S. and generates nautical products for safe and efficient maritime commerce in U.S. waters. Generate geospatial intelligence in all forms to include nautical and topographic products for the DoD. Geospatial data and information is gathered world-wide via Co production agreements. 4. Why is Hydrography important? • In WWII from 20-23 November 1943, the battle for Tarawa atoll in the Gilbert Islands was one of the bloodiest battles in military history. • 1,115 men killed & 2,292 men wounded. • In two square miles and in 78 hours of combat. • LCVPs were unable to clear the reef at neap tide. The marines were forced to wade ashore about 1,000 yards. Naval Oceanographic Office Approved for Public Release

  5. Why is Hydrography important? • This video demonstrates the importance of having an accurate environmental picture in the the littorals. Naval Oceanographic Office Approved for Public Release
