  1. Modelling the Seasonal Snow Potential in the Upper Euphrates Basin, TURKEY Şorman A.A.1, Şensoy A. 1, Yamankurt E. 1, Özkaya M.2 , Kaya Y.2,Şorman A.Ü. 3 1 Department of Civil Engineering, Anadolu University, Eskisehir, Turkey 2 Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration , Ankara, Turkey 3 Department of Civil Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey Balwois 2010 Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia, 25 - 29 May 2010

  2. Snow in Turkey Runoff (m3/s) 60~70 % of the total annual runoff by volume comes from spring time snowmelt runoff. %62 of total volume NOAA Web Site-www.natice.noaa.gov/ims/

  3. Objectives • Modelling discharge and snow covered area (SCA) • Forecasting discharge using numerical weather prediction data

  4. Location of study area

  5. Elevation distribution of basin

  6. Stations

  7. Station Details Measurements between 1903m – 2937m in 13 stations.

  8. Real Time Monitoring

  9. Remote Sensing MODIS Satellite • MOD10 / Terra • MYD10 / Aqua • Combined (Terra + Aqua) • Temporal Filter AIM to reduce cloud cover

  10. Remote Sensing

  11. Remote Sensing

  12. Remote Sensing From 46.93% to 3.64%, 93 % cloud removal is provided by Blended Product

  13. Snowmelt Runoff Model Snow Covered Area (SCA) is used as INPUT

  14. Hydrologiska Byrans Vattenbalansavdelning Snow Covered Area (SCA) is produced as OUTPUT

  15. Runoff Results

  16. Runoff Results

  17. Hydrologic Modelling Results • For SRM and HBV, model parameters are adjusted manually in order to closely resemble the observed runoff data • Nash and Sutcliffe (R2) criterion is calculated as the goodness of fit for the snowmelt season (Feb-June)

  18. SCA Depletion Results

  19. SCA Depletion Results

  20. SWE Results

  21. Future Plan
